1. Flying Blue Promo Rewards — the headline deal. When a Promo Reward hits your route, a ~$4,000 business seat prices from 45,000 miles + ~$250 (September 2026's Promo; the standard business rate is 60,000): (4,000 − 250) ÷ 45,000 × 100 = 8.3¢ per mile — over 4× our 2.0¢ transferable baseline (6.25¢ at the standard 60,000). 2. Aeroplan, surcharge-free — the reliable one. A ~$4,200 one-way business seat on Lufthansa or Swiss runs ~60,000 Aeroplan + only ~$150 in taxes: (4,200 − 150) ÷ 60,000 × 100 = 6.75¢ per mile. No fuel surcharges is the whole trick — see Aeroplan business to Europe.
3. Iberia off-peak — the cheapest way across. Off-peak business (US ↔ Madrid) prices near 68,000 Avios round trip + ~$300 on a ~$3,200 fare: (3,200 − 300) ÷ 68,000 × 100 = 4.26¢ per Avios — and off-peak economy is just ~34,000 round trip. 4. Lufthansa First via LifeMiles or United — not bookable right now. Lufthansa has given partner programs no First Class space since 1 June 2026, so neither LifeMiles nor United can book it today. For reference, when it was bookable, a ~$9,000 seat went for ~130,000 LifeMiles + ~$100: (9,000 − 100) ÷ 130,000 × 100 = 6.8¢ per mile. LifeMiles had also devalued three times in about 15 months — Lufthansa First rose from 87,000 to 130,000 miles, business from 63,000 to 70,000 and then as high as 92,400 (economy 48,400) after an unannounced April 2026 increase. How to book
- Dodge BA surcharges. For any Oneworld flight, price it through Iberia, Aer Lingus or Qatar instead of British Airways — same seat, hundreds less in fees.
- Watch Flying Blue Promo Rewards. They refresh monthly; set a reminder and pounce when your city is listed.
- Book Aeroplan/LifeMiles for low taxes. When you want predictability over a flash deal, these surcharge-free Star awards win on total cost.
- Book early for summer. Transatlantic business space is thinnest June–August; it opens ~11 months out, then trickles back inside two weeks of departure.
- Use an alert. seats.aero or a similar tool flags Lufthansa/Swiss/Air France business the moment it opens on your dates.
Best uses
There are three ways across:
- Star Alliance — via Aeroplan or LifeMiles. Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian and Brussels all fly into Europe from dozens of U.S. gateways. Air Canada Aeroplan adds no fuel surcharges, and Avianca LifeMiles keeps taxes tiny — but LifeMiles has devalued three times in roughly 15 months (most recently without notice in April 2026), so its once-low Star pricing needs a live check. Aeroplan is now the more dependable of the two doors.
- SkyTeam — via Flying Blue. Air France and KLM to Paris and Amsterdam, priced by Flying Blue, whose monthly Promo Rewards discount a rotating set of transatlantic routes by 25% (occasionally up to 50%). Delta One flash sales occasionally drop business to ~50,000 SkyMiles round trip.
- Oneworld — via Iberia Avios. Iberia routinely prices the cheapest transatlantic award of any program (US ↔ Madrid), with far lower surcharges than British Airways. Book the same Oneworld metal through Iberia, Aer Lingus or Qatar — never long-haul BA — to avoid the fuel fees.
