Miami is American Airlines' Latin America hub, and it's also one of the best-connected US airports for Europe. American and Iberia both fly to Madrid, and Miami has year-round nonstops on Lufthansa, Swiss, TAP Air Portugal, ITA, LOT, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Turkish. With that much competition, almost any points currency can get a Miami flyer to Europe. The main thing is to avoid the high-surcharge programs.

Quick answer
- Cheapest economy route: Iberia or American to Madrid, booked with Iberia Avios on off-peak dates or AAdvantage miles on a low dynamic date. Winter cash fares are often a better deal than points.
- Best business-class value: Iberia MIA–Madrid booked through AAdvantage at 57,500 miles on the partner chart, or with Iberia Avios. Air France or KLM on a Flying Blue Promo Reward (from 45,000, September 2026) is the alternative.
- Best program to collect: Avios. Iberia's Miami–Madrid route has low surcharges, and four banks feed Avios.
- Best card: Chase Sapphire Reserve, which transfers 1:1 directly to Iberia, plus Aeroplan and Flying Blue.

Best ways to book
American AAdvantage
American's own flights are priced dynamically. Partners use a fixed chart: 57,500 miles one-way in business to Europe (Frequent Miler, June 2026). That makes Iberia MIA–Madrid a good use of AA miles, with modest surcharges. British Airways' surcharges are high, even when booked with AAdvantage. Feeds: Citi ThankYou 1:1 (Strata Premier or Elite) and Bilt 1:1.
Iberia Plus (Avios)
Iberia usually has the cheapest Avios prices to Madrid. Off-peak business from the US East Coast is about 34,000 Avios one-way. Miami (about 4,400 miles from Madrid) sits in a higher distance band than New York or Boston, so check iberia.com before you transfer. Off-peak dates are cheaper than peak. Feeds: Chase 1:1 directly to Iberia. Amex and Capital One transfer 1:1 to BA, and Citi 1:1 to Qatar, and you can then move the Avios into your Iberia account.
Air Canada Aeroplan
Aeroplan books Lufthansa, Swiss, TAP, ITA, LOT and Turkish from MIA with no fuel surcharges, which is a lot of Star Alliance choice for one city. Every route is over 4,000 miles, so business falls in the 75,000-point band under the June 2026 chart (60,000 applies only to trips of 4,000 miles or less). Feeds: Amex, Chase, Capital One and Bilt.
Air France-KLM Flying Blue
Flying Blue's standard business award is 60,000 miles, and monthly Promo Rewards take 25% off selected routes (from 45,000 in September 2026). Air France and KLM fly MIA–Paris and MIA–Amsterdam. Feeds: Amex, Chase, Capital One and Citi, all 1:1. Expect about $200–300 in surcharges in business.
Avianca LifeMiles
LifeMiles has no fuel surcharges on the same Star carriers. Business to Europe costs about 70,000–92,400 miles one-way after the April 2026 devaluation. Feeds: Amex, Capital One, Citi and Bilt.
Sweet spots from Miami
- Iberia to Madrid in business. Book with AAdvantage at the 57,500-mile partner price, or with Avios on an off-peak date, whichever is cheaper. Iberia's surcharges are much lower than BA's.
- TAP to Lisbon or Swiss to Zurich on Aeroplan. A fixed 75,000 points with no surcharges. MIA is one of the few US airports with both routes.
- Flying Blue Promo Rewards. Air France or KLM business from 45,000 miles when Miami is on the monthly list.
- AA to Milan or Barcelona with AAdvantage. American's own dynamic prices drop on off-peak dates, and you fly nonstop without partner fees.

Taxes & surcharges
- Iberia: low surcharges, which is why it beats BA for the same oneworld route.
- British Airways and Virgin Atlantic's own flights: high carrier surcharges in premium cabins.
- Flying Blue: about $200–300 one-way in business.
- Aeroplan and LifeMiles: no carrier surcharges.
- AAdvantage on American's own flights: no carrier surcharges, but UK departure tax applies on returns from London.

How many points for business class to Europe from Miami? About 57,500 AAdvantage miles on partners, 75,000 Aeroplan points, or 45,000–60,000 Flying Blue miles one-way, plus taxes.
