Avios is the single most flexible airline currency for a U.S. traveler who understands it — and the most misunderstood. The key idea: Avios is one shared currency across four airlines — British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Qatar Airways — and you can move your balance freely between them to book whichever program prices your flight cheapest. What Avios are worth
We value Avios at 1.4¢ each. That's a blended number — Avios swings more than most currencies because it's distance-based, not fare-based. On the wrong redemption (long-haul BA business with fat fuel surcharges) you might get under 1¢. On the right one (a short nonstop, or Iberia off-peak across the Atlantic) you'll clear 2–9¢. The whole skill is steering toward the good ones.
One currency, four airlines
You hold Avios in each program's account, but they're interchangeable — link the accounts and move Avios between British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Qatar at a 1:1 rate, usually within minutes (a household/"Avios pooling" account makes this seamless).

How to earn Avios
Four different banks feed Avios 1:1, so you never have to fly to build a balance:
- Amex Membership Rewards → British Airways / Qatar Avios (1:1, instant)
- Chase Ultimate Rewards → British Airways, Iberia & Aer Lingus Avios (1:1, instant)
- Capital One miles → British Airways / Qatar Avios (1:1)

Because every point lands in some Avios account and you can pool them, it doesn't matter which bank you use — get the Avios into any of the four programs, then shuffle to the one that prices your flight best. A Chase Sapphire Preferred, Amex Gold or Citi Strata Premier each feeds Avios directly.
How award pricing works (the distance chart)
Avios prices most short-haul and partner awards on distance flown, in bands — so a cheap nonstop under ~650 miles costs the same tiny number of Avios whether the cash fare is $80 or $300. Typical economy pricing (verify current):

Off-peak vs. peak. Avios awards are dated off-peak or peak (school holidays and summer are peak). Off-peak can be ~15–25% cheaper — shifting a trip by a few days into an off-peak window is free savings.
Reward Flight Saver (RFS). On short-haul British Airways and Aer Lingus, RFS caps the cash portion of an award (you pay a low fixed fee instead of full surcharges) in exchange for a modest Avios price. It's why short European and (on partners) short U.S. hops are the classic Avios play.
Best uses (sweet spots), with examples
1. Short nonstops under ~650 miles — the flagship sweet spot. A $220 short hop that a partner sells for full miles elsewhere prices at the bottom Avios band. Example: a $180 nonstop at ~9,000 Avios round trip + low RFS fees = well over 2¢/Avios, and you skip cash fares that spike at the last minute. Distance, not price, sets the cost — so the pricier the cash ticket on a short route, the better Avios looks.
2. Iberia off-peak across the Atlantic (US ↔ Madrid). Iberia routinely prices Madrid the cheapest of the four. Off-peak economy round trips land near ~34,000 Avios, and off-peak business near ~68,000 Avios round trip — a ~$3,000+ lie-flat seat for the miles, often 4–6¢/Avios. Iberia's own surcharges are far lower than British Airways'.

4. Aer Lingus to Dublin from the East Coast. Aer Lingus prices transatlantic from Boston, New York and other East Coast cities with lower surcharges than British Airways, and Dublin's U.S. preclearance means you land domestic on the way home.
The one trap to avoid
Long-haul British Airways in business or first. BA adds some of the highest carrier-imposed surcharges in the industry — a transatlantic BA business award can carry $600–$1,000+ in cash fees, dragging your cents-per-Avios below 1¢. The fix is simple: for the same Oneworld flight, book through Iberia, Aer Lingus or Qatar (or American AAdvantage) instead, where surcharges are lower. Same seat, a fraction of the cash.
Fees & fine print
- Surcharges vary by program, not by cabin alone — British Airways high, Iberia/Aer Lingus/Qatar much lower. Always price the same flight in each Avios program before you transfer.
- Move Avios between the four programs 1:1, usually within minutes; there's no fee to combine, so keep points in your bank until you know which airline to feed.
- Off-peak/peak dating applies to award prices — check the calendar and shift a few days if you can.
- Distance-based pricing rewards short nonstops on expensive cash routes; it's poor value on cheap long-haul economy you'd rather just pay cash for.
Bottom line
Avios wins on flexibility and short-haul value. Treat it as one currency with four front doors: earn from any of four banks, then route your Avios to British Airways for short nonstops, Iberia for cheap transatlantic economy and business, Aer Lingus for lower-surcharge East Coast crossings, and Qatar for Qsuite business class. Avoid long-haul British Airways premium awards and their surcharges, and Avios becomes one of the highest-value currencies you can hold.
