I flew Qatar Airways Qsuite business class round-trip between Dallas and Hyderabad for 80,000 Avios plus $280 in taxes each way — and because I moved my points over during a 30% transfer bonus, those Avios cost me far fewer Amex points than the sticker number suggests. Here's the exact playbook, including the bonus trick that did most of the work.

The transfer bonus is the hero here. Normally 160,000 Avios would cost 160,000 Amex Membership Rewards points. During the 30% bonus, Amex transferred at 1:1.3, so the same award only drained ~123,100 of my points — pushing my real value to 3.4¢ per Amex point, well above our 2.0¢ baseline. How I earned & booked the points
The whole trip ran on Amex Membership Rewards → Qatar Avios, and timing the transfer bonus is what made it cheap:
- I accumulated Membership Rewards on my Amex cards (see the Amex Gold and Amex Platinum guides for the best earning categories).
- I waited for a transfer bonus. Amex → Qatar/British Airways Avios runs periodic 30%+ promotions — that's the signal to move.
- When the 30% bonus hit, I transferred ~61,500 MR per 80,000 Avios (instantly) and booked immediately.
Key lesson: never transfer to Avios speculatively. Confirm the Qsuite space is there, wait for a bonus, then move the exact amount you need.
How to find this award space
- Search Qatar's own site (qatarairways.com → Privilege Club) — it shows its own Qsuite space most reliably.
- Cross-check partners that display Qatar space — British Airways, American (
aa.com), Alaska. Avios is usually the cheapest way to pay. - Use an alert tool (seats.aero / ExpertFlyer) so you're notified when DFW–DOH business opens on your dates.
- Search one seat at a time — engines often hide the second seat; book singles and link them.
- Be flexible ±3 days. Long-haul business space clusters ~11 months out and again within ~2 weeks of departure.
What the Qsuite is like
The factual product: Qsuite flies on the DFW–Doha long-haul leg (the Doha–Hyderabad segment is a shorter flight in standard business, not Qsuite). Qsuite is a 1-2-1 layout where every seat has a closing privacy door; the center pairs convert to a double bed, and center quads can drop their dividers into a four-person private suite — the reason it's rated among the best business classes in the world. Dining is à la carte, on-demand. In Doha you connect through the enormous Al Mourjan Business Lounge.
Was it worth it?
At ~2.65¢ per Avios — and ~3.4¢ per Amex point after the 30% transfer bonus — this was an easy win over our baseline. The honest caveat: Hyderabad-bound travelers connect through Doha, and the shorter Doha–Hyderabad leg drops to standard business rather than Qsuite.
