Houston to India on Points: Best Award Routes & Cards

By Krit · Updated · How we research

Award prices are dynamic and change daily. Treat every number here as a dated, typical range and search live before you transfer points.

Houston has a large Indian community in Sugar Land and the west side, and Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is a United hub. But no airline flies nonstop from Houston to India. The routes that matter connect through the Gulf: Qatar to Doha, Emirates to Dubai and Turkish to Istanbul all fly nonstop from IAH. United, Lufthansa, British Airways, KLM and Air France add one-stop routings through Europe. Qatar Qsuite booked with Avios is usually the best use of points.

Quick answer

  • Cheapest economy route: a one-stop on Qatar, Turkish or Emirates. Compare against cash first, because economy fares to India are often cheaper than they look in miles.
  • Best business-class value: Qatar Qsuite IAH–Doha–India for 80,000 Avios one-way off-peak (up to about 96,000 on peak dates) plus about $280 in taxes.
  • Best program to collect: Avios, which four banks feed. Aeroplan is a good backup for Star Alliance routings through Istanbul or Frankfurt.
  • Best card: Capital One Venture X. It transfers 1:1 to Qatar, Turkish, Etihad, Aeroplan and Flying Blue, the widest set of India routes from one card.

Nonstop flights from IAH

There's no nonstop to India. These are the nonstop first legs from IAH that connect onward to Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and beyond.

United's long-haul network out of IAH goes to Europe, not India. United's own India flights leave from Newark.

Best ways to book

Qatar Privilege Club (Avios)

Qsuite flies the long IAH–Doha leg, and the shorter Doha–India flight is standard business. Qatar cut its US–Indian Subcontinent business rate to 80,000 Avios one-way off-peak in 2026, down from 96,000. Expect about $280 in taxes (our DFW–Hyderabad booking; Houston prices the same). Feeds: Amex 1:1 and Capital One 1:1, Citi 1:1 to Qatar, and Chase 1:1 to BA (then move the Avios to Qatar). Transfer when there's a bonus: Amex's 30% Avios promotion ran through September 27, 2026.

American AAdvantage

AAdvantage books Qatar for 70,000 miles one-way in business to the Indian Subcontinent on its partner chart (Frequent Miler, June 2026). Feeds: Citi ThankYou 1:1 (Strata Premier or Elite) and Bilt 1:1.

Air Canada Aeroplan

Aeroplan adds no carrier surcharges and can book Turkish via Istanbul, or United and Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich, onward to India. Our India hub puts business at roughly 90,000–110,000 points one-way. Feeds: Amex, Chase, Capital One and Bilt, all 1:1.

United MileagePlus

As a United hub flyer you'll have MileagePlus miles. United prices awards dynamically and can book Lufthansa, Air India and Turkish connections. United doesn't add fuel surcharges, but its partner business prices to India often run higher than Aeroplan's for the same seats, so compare both. Feeds: Chase 1:1 and Bilt 1:1.

Turkish Miles&Smiles and Emirates Skywards

Turkish flies IAH–Istanbul and connects to several Indian cities. Capital One, Citi and Bilt transfer to it 1:1. Emirates is the weaker option: carrier surcharges are high, and the transfer ratios are poor (Amex 1:0.8, Citi 1:0.8, Capital One 1:0.75). Chase ended its Emirates partnership in October 2025.

Sweet spots from Houston

  1. Qsuite on Avios with a transfer bonus. About 80,000 Avios plus $280 one-way for a seat that often sells for several thousand dollars. With a 30% Amex bonus, that's about 61,500 Membership Rewards points.
  2. Qatar on AAdvantage for 70,000. The same Qatar flight for 10,000 fewer miles than Qatar's own peak price, if you have Citi or Bilt points.
  3. Turkish via Istanbul on Aeroplan. There are no carrier surcharges, and this route is useful in December when Gulf award space is gone.

Taxes & surcharges

  • Qatar via Avios: about $280 one-way in business.
  • Aeroplan and United: no carrier surcharges, so you pay mainly government taxes.
  • Emirates, British Airways and Air France-KLM: carrier surcharges apply, and BA's are among the highest. Avoid BA-operated long-haul business on Avios.
