United MileagePlus is one of the most useful mileage currencies in the U.S. — not because United gives away the farm (it doesn't), but because you can earn United miles easily (they're a 1:1 transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards), and United's Star Alliance network reaches nearly everywhere. It's the workhorse program.

What United miles are worth
We value MileagePlus miles at 1.35¢ each. United has no published award chart, so pricing floats with cash fares — but three things keep the value up: no close-in booking fees, no fuel surcharges on United-operated flights, and free changes/cancellations (miles redeposited free). Aim to beat 1.35¢; premium-cabin partner awards routinely hit 3–6¢.
How to earn United miles
- Fly United or Star Alliance partners — miles based on ticket price × status multiplier (5x–11x).
- Transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards 1:1, instantly — this is the big one. A Sapphire Preferred or Ink card feeds United directly. (United is also a Bilt transfer partner.)
- United co-brand cards (Explorer, Quest, Club Infinite) — big sign-up bonuses, plus a free checked bag and priority boarding on the Explorer.
- MileagePlus Shopping & Dining portals — clickthrough for 1–10x per dollar.
Because United takes Chase points 1:1 instantly, don't hoard United miles — keep the flexibility in Chase and transfer only when you've found the award.
How award pricing works
United uses dynamic pricing for its own flights, but partner awards (booked with United miles on Lufthansa, ANA, Air Canada, etc.) are often more stable and are where the value hides:

Best uses (sweet spots), with examples
1. The Excursionist Perk — a free one-way inside a round trip. On a round-trip award with United miles, you can add a free extra segment in a different region. Example: US → Europe, then a free Europe → North Africa hop, then Europe → US. That middle leg would otherwise cost 20K–30K miles.
2. Cheap domestic Saver economy. A $180 nonstop pricing at 10,000 miles + $5.60 = 1.74¢/mile, above baseline. United's own short-hauls are the everyday win.
3. Partner business class to Europe/Asia. A ~$5,500 lie-flat seat on Lufthansa or ANA at 88,000 miles + ~$50 (United adds no fuel surcharges) = ~6.2¢/mile. This is the redemption to save Chase points for.
4. Star Alliance to hard-to-reach places. United miles route to 190+ countries via Star Alliance — often the only points option to secondary cities in Africa, Central Asia and the South Pacific.
Elite status (Premier)
Status is earned via PQP (Premier Qualifying Points, ~$1 spent = 1 PQP) and PQF (flights):

Fees & fine print
- No fuel surcharges on United-operated flights; some partners (e.g. Lufthansa) add them on their own metal.
- Free changes and cancellations — miles go back to your account at no charge (a genuine advantage over Delta's cash-priced awards).
- No close-in booking fee — book day-of without penalty.
- Miles don't expire as long as the account has activity every 18 months (any earning/redemption resets the clock; a co-brand card keeps it alive automatically).
Bottom line
United MileagePlus wins on access and flexibility, not on chart bargains. Keep your points in Chase for maximum flexibility, transfer to United when you find a Saver economy fare or a surcharge-free partner business-class seat, and use the Excursionist Perk to squeeze a free extra city out of a round trip.
