The Unitedβ Explorer Card is the card most United flyers should carry. For a modest annual fee β usually waived the first year β it hands you a free first checked bag, gets you on the plane earlier, opens up more saver award seats you literally can't see without it, and drops two United Club day passes in your lap each year. It won't build a lounge lifestyle on its own, but for a family that flies United a couple of times a year it pays for itself before you've even boarded.

What the miles are worth
We value United MileagePlus miles at 1.35Β’ each. United uses dynamic pricing with no published award chart, so value swings with the cash fare β but Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer 1:1 into United, which keeps miles easy to top up. Your realistic range is roughly 1.2Β’ on a bad domestic redemption to 6Β’+ on a well-timed international business seat (especially surcharge-free partners like ANA or Lufthansa booked through United).
The cents-per-point (CPP) formula, every time:
(cash price β taxes/fees) Γ· miles Γ 100 = Β’ per mile
A 60,000-mile bonus is therefore worth:
- ~$810 in flights at our 1.35Β’ baseline Β·
- far more on the right partner award β a $2,000+ transatlantic business seat can hit 3β6Β’/mile.

These are United-only miles β they don't transfer to other airlines. But United is a Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partner, so a Chase Sapphire Preferred can feed your MileagePlus balance 1:1 when you need to top off an award.
Earning rates
| Rate | Category |
|---|---|
| 2x | United purchases (tickets, seats, inflight, United-operated) |
| 2x | Dining (incl. eligible delivery) |
| 2x | Hotels booked directly with the hotel |
| 1x | Everything else |
The Explorer isn't a category powerhouse β pair it with a Chase Sapphire Preferred so your Ultimate Rewards can transfer into United when you need to top off an award.
Benefits & credits
- Free first checked bag β for you and one companion on the same reservation, when you pay with the card. Two people, round trip, is up to $160/year of avoided bag fees β that alone beats the fee.
- Priority boarding β Group 2, so overhead space is never a gamble.
- 2 United Club one-time passes each year (~$59 each in value).
- Expanded award availability β cardholders see additional saver-level award seats on united.com that non-cardholders don't. This is the quiet, underrated perk.
- Global Entry / TSA PreCheck credit β up to ~$100 every 4 years (verify).
- 25% back on United inflight purchases (food, drinks, Wi-Fi) as a statement credit.
- Primary auto rental collision damage waiver, trip cancellation/interruption and baggage-delay coverage (verify current terms).
- PQP through spend β recent versions let card spend earn Premier Qualifying Points toward Medallion-style status, and hitting a spend threshold can waive the PQP requirement for a lower Premier tier. Verify the current formula.
- No foreign transaction fees.
The three United personal cards
If you fly United more than a handful of times a year, look up the ladder. Fees and perks are refreshed periodically β verify current terms before choosing.
| Explorer | Quest | Club Infinite | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | ~$95 (waived yr 1) | ~$250 | ~$525 |
| United earning | 2x | 3x | 4x |
| Free checked bags | 1st (you + companion) | 1st & 2nd | 1st & 2nd |
| United Club | 2 passes/yr | 2 passes/yr | Full membership |
| Statement credits | 25% inflight | ~$125 United credit + award-flight rebates | Global Entry credit |
| Best for | Casual United flyer | Frequent flyer who checks bags | Lounge-lifestyle flyer |
Quest adds a second free checked bag, a ~$125 annual United purchase credit and periodic award-flight mile rebates (roughly two ~5,000-mile credits when you redeem) β it often nets out cheaper than the Explorer once you use the credits. Club Infinite bundles a full United Club membership (worth ~$650 alone), so it makes sense only if you'd otherwise pay for the club.
Best uses (sweet spots), with examples
1. Cover the fee with checked bags.
Two people flying round trip check two bags each way: 4 bags Γ ~$40 = $160 avoided. The card costs ~$95 (and $0 year one). Done.
2. Use expanded award access for a domestic saver seat.
A $220 nonstop that prices at 12,500 miles + $5.60 as a saver award works out to (220 β 5.60) Γ· 12,500 Γ 100 = 1.72Β’/mile β and the seat may only appear because you hold the card.
3. Transfer Ultimate Rewards in for an international business award.
Move 88,000 Chase points β 88,000 United miles β a ~$3,000 lie-flat seat to Europe on a surcharge-free partner: (3,000 β 200) Γ· 88,000 Γ 100 = 3.18Β’/mile. See the full playbook in our United MileagePlus guide.
4. Two lounge visits on long layovers. Two United Club passes turn a pair of miserable connections into a shower, snacks and Wi-Fi β ~$118 of value for free.
Fine print worth knowing
- 5/24 rule: Chase generally won't approve you if you've opened 5+ personal cards (any issuer) in the past 24 months. Check your count first.
- The free bag benefit requires paying for the ticket with the card and applies to the cardmember plus one companion on the same reservation.
- United miles don't expire while your MileagePlus account has activity; card activity counts.
- Award pricing is dynamic β always run the CPP math before you redeem, and compare against the cash fare.
Who should get it
Get the Explorer if you fly United once or twice a year, check a bag, and want earlier boarding plus a couple of lounge visits β the free bag alone justifies it. Step up to Quest if you check two bags and will use the United credit; Club Infinite only if you'd otherwise buy a United Club membership. If you mostly want flexible points rather than United-only miles, start with the Chase Sapphire Preferred and transfer to United on demand.
Bottom line
The United Explorer is a cheap, high-utility co-brand: free bag, earlier boarding, hidden award seats and lounge passes, with the first-year fee waived. It won't replace a transferable-points card β pair it with one β but for a United loyalist it's close to free money.
