How to earn (or buy) the miles
LifeMiles has two cheap on-ramps, which is unusual.
Path A — transfer from a bank (1:1). Three major transferable currencies feed LifeMiles:
- Amex Membership Rewards → Avianca LifeMiles (1:1)
- Capital One miles → Avianca LifeMiles (1:1)
- Citi ThankYou → Avianca LifeMiles (1:1)
(Bilt also transfers to Avianca; Chase Ultimate Rewards does not — LifeMiles is one of the few big programs Chase doesn't feed.)
Path B — buy the miles on a promo. LifeMiles runs frequent buy-miles sales (often up to ~150% bonus), which can drop the cost per mile low enough that buying 120,000 miles for a $9,000 First seat still nets a huge margin. A realistic path to 120,000 LifeMiles:

How to find this award space
Lufthansa First is the hardest-to-find seat in this guide, but it follows predictable rules.
- Know the release window. Lufthansa's own Miles & More members can book First earlier, but partner programs (like LifeMiles) generally see space only at the very last minute — these days reportedly at most 2–3 days before departure, and often just a day or two out (sometimes same-day). So First hunting is a very-short-notice game.
- Search united.com to spot the space. United displays Lufthansa First availability clearly; if United can see it in those final days before departure, LifeMiles can usually book it (and without surcharges).
- Confirm and book on LifeMiles (lifemiles.com). If the site chokes — it sometimes does on First itineraries or mixed cabins — call LifeMiles to ticket it.
- Set alerts on seats.aero or ExpertFlyer for First space on your route and dates so you're ready the moment space opens in those final days.
- Search one passenger at a time. First cabins are tiny (often 8 seats); two-together is rare, so book singles and link them.
What Lufthansa First Class is like
The factual product (verified, not embellished): Lufthansa First Class is one of the most exclusive cabins in the sky — a small forward cabin (typically 8 seats on the A340/A380, fewer on the 747-8) with a wide seat plus a separate reclining position, caviar service, and fine dining. The signature experience is on the ground in Frankfurt: the First Class Terminal (FCT) is a private facility with its own security, à-la-carte dining, a cigar lounge and bathtubs — and a chauffeur drive to the aircraft, historically in a Porsche or Mercedes. Award tickets in First include the FCT (or the First Class Lounge at other stations), priority everything, and generous baggage.
Is it worth it?

The honest counterpoint: the price has crept up (87,000 miles before August 2024, ~120,000 now); First space is genuinely hard to find and mostly opens just days before departure, so it demands real flexibility; the LifeMiles website can be glitchy enough that you may have to call in to ticket; and if you'd never pay $9,000 in cash, part of the "value" is theoretical.
