The Citi Strata Premier℠ Card is the most underrated $95 travel card on the market. Its bonus categories are unusually wide — it earns 3x on six everyday spending buckets at once, including gas and groceries and travel and dining — and it's the cheapest key into Citi's ThankYou transfer program, which quietly owns some of the best award sweet spots in the game (hello, Avios and Turkish). If you already have a Chase or Amex card and want a complementary earner, this is the one to look at.

What the points are worth
We value Citi ThankYou points at 1.8¢ each. That's a touch below Chase and Amex, but the gap is smaller than it looks because Citi's transfer chart hits several premium sweet spots at low mileage. Points transfer 1:1 to airline and hotel partners, and when you hold the Strata Premier (or any premium Citi card) they're also worth a flat value toward paid travel through CitiTravel.com.
The CPP math we use everywhere is:
(cash price − taxes/fees) ÷ points × 100 = cents per point (CPP)
A 60,000-point bonus is therefore worth:
- $600 cashed out (don't) ·
- roughly $1,080 at our 1.8¢ blended valuation ·
- $2,000+ when funneled into a well-chosen premium-cabin award.
Where your points can go
The Strata Premier's ThankYou points transfer to these airline and hotel programs — tap any partner to see how to use those points, what they're worth, and the best redemptions:
Airline transfer partners Air France/KLM Flying Blue · American AAdvantage · Avianca LifeMiles · British Airways/Qatar Avios · Cathay Asia Miles · Emirates Skywards · Etihad Guest · EVA Air · Qantas Frequent Flyer · Singapore KrisFlyer · Turkish Miles&Smiles · Virgin Atlantic · JetBlue TrueBlue

Earning rates
| Rate | Category |
|---|---|
| 10x | Hotels, car rentals & attractions booked via CitiTravel.com |
| 3x | Air travel & other travel |
| 3x | Hotels (booked direct) |
| 3x | Supermarkets |
| 3x | Gas stations & EV charging |
| 3x | Restaurants |
| 1x | Everything else |
That six-way 3x is the headline. At 1.8¢/point, 3x groceries and gas = an effective 5.4% back in travel — from categories most travel cards ignore entirely. There's no bonus-category spending cap, which makes this a genuine everyday driver, not just a "put travel on it" card.
Benefits & credits
Credits and perks below are current-but-verify — Citi changes amounts and terms often, so confirm each figure on the issuer's page before you count on it.
- $100 annual hotel credit — a single hotel stay of $500+ (excluding taxes/fees) booked through CitiTravel.com gets $100 off, once per calendar year. Used once, it drops the net annual fee to -$5 (verify current terms).
- No foreign transaction fees — use it freely abroad (verify).
- Purchase protection, extended warranty and damage/theft coverage on eligible purchases.
- Trip and travel protections — coverage details vary; confirm the current benefits guide, as Citi has trimmed some protections across its lineup.
- Access to Citi ThankYou transfer partners — the real benefit, covered below.
Best uses (sweet spots), with examples
1. Avios short-haul via Qatar (or transfer to BA/Iberia/Aer Lingus).
Citi transfers 1:1 to Qatar, and Avios is one shared currency across British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Qatar. A ~$180 short nonstop can go for ~9,000 Avios + ~$6 in taxes:
($180 − $6) ÷ 9,000 × 100 = 1.93¢. Not eye-watering, but reliable value on routes cash-priced high.
2. Turkish Miles&Smiles for United flights.
Transfer to Turkish and book United domestic first/business at 12,500–15,000 miles. A ~$1,100 mainland-to-Hawaii seat for 15,000 miles + $5.60:
($1,100 − $5.60) ÷ 15,000 × 100 = 7.30¢. That single redemption returns four times the annual fee.
3. Transatlantic business via Flying Blue.
Watch Air France/KLM's monthly Promo Rewards, then transfer 1:1. A ~$4,000 lie-flat seat for ~50,000 miles + ~$250:
($4,000 − $250) ÷ 50,000 × 100 = 7.50¢.
4. The simple floor: CitiTravel.com. No award research — redeem points at a flat rate toward any paid flight or hotel with no blackout dates. Great when a cash fare is cheap and transfers can't beat it.
Fine print worth knowing
- Citi's 48-month bonus rule: you generally can't earn a Strata Premier (or legacy Premier/Preferred) bonus if you've earned or closed a card in the same ThankYou family in the past 48 months. Check your history first.
- Citi's application velocity rules (roughly one new Citi card per ~8 days / two per ~65 days) can trip up heavy applicants.
- Points don't expire while the account is open; once transferred out, they follow the partner's rules and can't be pulled back.
- Transfers are usually near-instant but a few partners can take longer — never transfer speculatively before you've confirmed award space.
Who should get it
Get the Strata Premier if you want one low-fee card that earns 3x on the everyday stuff other travel cards ignore (gas, groceries) and opens Citi's transfer partners. It's the ideal third card next to a Chase and an Amex — the categories barely overlap.
Consider the Citi Strata Elite if you want lounge access and premium credits and will use them. Pair it with the no-fee Citi Double Cash to earn 2x ThankYou on everything else and pool it all into one transfer stash. If you're choosing your first travel card, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is a friendlier starting point.
Bottom line
The Strata Premier is a quiet workhorse: wide 3x categories with no caps, a hotel credit that erases the fee, and access to a transfer program with genuinely elite sweet spots. It won't dazzle you with lounges — that's the Elite's job — but as a low-cost points engine it's one of the best values in the market.
