⚠️ Mind the surcharge. Like the other Gulf carriers, Etihad adds carrier-imposed fees to award tickets. A ~$600 co-pay is realistic and can run higher by route/date — always price the total on the confirmation page before you transfer points in.
How to earn the miles
Etihad Guest is fed by the transferable-points banks — verify the current roster in your bank's portal, because Etihad's partner list and ratios have changed over time:
- Capital One miles → Etihad Guest (1:1)
- Citi ThankYou → Etihad Guest (1:1 on premium cards)
- Bilt Rewards → Etihad Guest
Amex Membership Rewards no longer works: Amex dropped Etihad Guest as a transfer partner effective June 30, 2026. If your points live with Amex, you'll need to build the balance through Capital One, Citi or Bilt instead — exactly the kind of partner-list change this guide has always warned about.
Because the partner list moves, check that your bank still transfers to Etihad Guest — and at what ratio — before you build toward this. Don't assume last year's chart still holds.
A realistic path to 100,000 Etihad Guest miles:
- Open a transferable-points card with a strong welcome bonus — e.g. the Capital One Venture X or Citi Strata Premier.
- Meet the minimum spend on normal purchases. 100k is a large target, so a two-card year (or pooling a partner's points) is realistic.
- Transfer to Etihad Guest only once your award seat is confirmed — transfers are one-way and can't be reversed.
How to find this award space
The First Apartment exists only on the A380, and Etihad flies the A380 on a limited set of routes — so the search is really about finding the right aircraft on the right day:
- Confirm the A380 route. Etihad operates the A380 on select flights (historically New York and London among them). If your flight isn't an A380, there's no First Apartment — check the aircraft type first.
- Search on etihad.com (Etihad Guest → redeem) for the cleanest view of First award space.
- Cross-check partner programs that can book Etihad First, and compare the mileage price and surcharges — sometimes another currency is cheaper into the same seat (verify current partners).
- Use an award-search tool (seats.aero / ExpertFlyer) to get alerted when First opens on your A380 dates — availability is genuinely scarce.
- Search one passenger at a time and stay flexible; two First Apartments on the same flight are hard to find.
What the First Apartment is like
The factual product (verified, not embellished): the Etihad A380 First Apartment is a fully enclosed private room — one of the largest seats in the sky — with a separate reclining armchair and a separate 6-foot-plus flat bed (you don't sleep in your seat; the bed is its own surface), a personal vanity/wardrobe, a chilled minibar, and a large HD screen. There is one onboard shower for the First cabin, staffed by a dedicated attendant. Above the First cabin sits The Residence — a separate three-room suite (living room, en-suite bedroom, private bathroom with shower) with a personal butler, sold/redeemed apart from the Apartments and among the most exclusive products in commercial aviation. First passengers also get a dedicated ground experience and lounge in Abu Dhabi.
Is it worth it?
At ~17.4¢ per mile, this may be the highest cents-per-mile redemption you'll ever book — 100,000 miles that cash out around $1,000 buying an $18,000 room in the sky. What makes it strong: the Apartment is a genuinely singular hard product (a separate seat and bed, plus a shower), and 100k Guest miles is a smaller target than most Gulf First awards. The honest counterpoints: First Apartment award space is rare, the A380 flies a limited set of routes, the ~$600 surcharge is real money and can run higher, and Abu Dhabi may be a connection rather than your destination. If you'd never pay $18,000 cash, part of the "value" is theoretical — but a separate bed and a shower at altitude are not.
