Houston to Europe on Points: Best Award Routes & Cards

By Krit · Updated · How we research

Award prices are dynamic and change daily. Treat every number here as a dated, typical range and search live before you transfer points.

Houston Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is a United hub, so the core of its Europe service is United to London, Frankfurt, Munich and Amsterdam. Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, British Airways, ITA Airways and Turkish all fly IAH too. That gives Houston nonstops in all three alliances: Star Alliance through United, Lufthansa, ITA and Turkish, SkyTeam through KLM and Air France, and oneworld through British Airways. Because Houston is a long way from Europe, distance-based programs price every route in their higher bands, so the promos and dynamic deals are where Houston flyers find the most value.

Quick answer

  • Cheapest economy route: United or KLM to Amsterdam, or United to Frankfurt, priced with United's dynamic awards or Flying Blue. Compare with cash fares, which are often cheap in winter.
  • Best business-class value: KLM IAH–Amsterdam or Air France IAH–Paris on a Flying Blue Promo Reward (business from 45,000 miles on the September 2026 promo, 60,000 standard).
  • Best program to collect: Aeroplan, which books United, Lufthansa, ITA and Turkish from IAH with no carrier surcharges and is fed by four banks.
  • Best card: Chase Sapphire Reserve, which transfers 1:1 to United, Aeroplan and Flying Blue, the three programs that matter most at IAH.

Nonstop flights from IAH

Winter 2026–27, from the October 2026 airline lists:

Route Airline Alliance Book with
IAH–London (LHR) United, British Airways Star / oneworld Aeroplan, United, Avios
IAH–Frankfurt (FRA) United, Lufthansa Star Aeroplan, LifeMiles, United
IAH–Munich (MUC) United Star Aeroplan, United
IAH–Amsterdam (AMS) United, KLM Star / SkyTeam Flying Blue, Aeroplan
IAH–Paris (CDG) Air France SkyTeam Flying Blue
IAH–Rome (FCO) ITA Airways Star Aeroplan, LifeMiles
IAH–Istanbul (IST) Turkish Star Aeroplan, Miles&Smiles

ITA Airways joined Star Alliance on April 1, 2026, so Star programs like Aeroplan can now book its Rome flight.

Best ways to book

Air Canada Aeroplan

Aeroplan uses a distance chart with no fuel surcharges. Since June 1, 2026, business costs 60,000 points up to 4,000 miles and 75,000 for 4,001–6,000 miles on Air Canada and select partners. Every Houston–Europe nonstop is over 4,000 miles (IAH–Frankfurt is about 5,200), so plan on about 75,000 one-way. Feeds: Amex, Chase, Capital One and Bilt, all 1:1.

United MileagePlus

United prices its own flights dynamically. Saver-level business to Europe can open up, but peak dates can cost far more than Aeroplan does for the same United seat. United adds no fuel surcharges, and it's the program you'll earn by flying the hub. Feeds: Chase 1:1 and Bilt 1:1.

Air France-KLM Flying Blue

Flying Blue's standard business award to Europe is 60,000 miles. Monthly Promo Rewards take 25% off selected routes, and the September 2026 promo started business at 45,000. IAH has KLM and Air France nonstops, so it can benefit when a promo includes Houston. Feeds: Amex, Chase, Capital One and Citi, all 1:1. Expect about $200–300 in surcharges in business.

Avianca LifeMiles

LifeMiles adds no fuel surcharges on Lufthansa, United, ITA and Turkish. Business to Europe now runs about 70,000–92,400 miles one-way after the April 2026 devaluation. Feeds: Amex, Capital One, Citi and Bilt. Chase doesn't transfer to LifeMiles.

British Airways (Avios) and AAdvantage

BA flies IAH–London, but its own long-haul awards carry steep surcharges in business. AAdvantage prices BA at 57,500 miles in business on its partner chart (Frequent Miler, June 2026), but you'll still pay BA's surcharges. Treat it as a fallback.

Sweet spots from Houston

  1. Flying Blue Promo to Amsterdam or Paris. When Houston is on the monthly promo list, business from 45,000 miles is the lowest Europe price out of IAH.
  2. Aeroplan on United to Munich or Frankfurt. 75,000 points with no surcharges for a United Polaris seat, often available when United charges far more in MileagePlus miles.
  3. ITA to Rome on Aeroplan. ITA has been Star Alliance since April 2026, so this is a new way to reach Italy from Houston without a connection.
  4. Turkish to Istanbul. Book with Aeroplan, or with Miles&Smiles through Capital One, Citi or Bilt. You can continue to the eastern Mediterranean from there.

Taxes & surcharges

  • Aeroplan, United and LifeMiles: no carrier surcharges.
  • Flying Blue: about $200–300 one-way in business on Air France or KLM.
  • British Airways Avios: $600–$1,000+ in fees on transatlantic business. Avoid it.
  • Returning from London: the UK's departure tax is steep in premium cabins. Starting your return in Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Munich usually saves cash.

FAQ

Which European cities have nonstops from Houston? In winter 2026–27: London, Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome and Istanbul.

Are United miles or Aeroplan points better from IAH? Use Aeroplan for its fixed, surcharge-free business prices. United's dynamic pricing occasionally undercuts it and has no partner booking quirks. Compare both before you transfer Chase points.

How many points for business class to Europe from Houston? About 75,000 Aeroplan points, 45,000–60,000 Flying Blue miles, or 70,000–92,400 LifeMiles one-way, plus taxes.

Can I get to Europe on Southwest from Houston? No. Southwest has no transatlantic flights. From Hobby you'd still use IAH or connect elsewhere.
