American Airlines miles are among the most valuable major-airline currencies — we peg AAdvantage at 1.65¢, higher than United, Delta or Southwest — because AA still publishes partner award levels with genuine off-peak and "web special" sweet spots. The Citi® / AAdvantage® cards are how most flyers plug into that ecosystem: the Platinum Select for a free bag and status progress, the Executive if you want an Admirals Club membership wrapped into a credit card.

What AAdvantage miles are worth
We value AAdvantage miles at 1.65¢ each — the top of the U.S. legacy-carrier pack. The value comes from partner awards: American prices Japan Airlines, Qatar, British Airways, Cathay and others on levels that can massively beat cash. And in a quirk worth knowing, Citi ThankYou points transfer to AAdvantage — so a Citi Strata Premier can feed these miles, which few transferable programs can do.
The cents-per-point (CPP) formula, every time:
(cash price − taxes/fees) ÷ miles × 100 = ¢ per mile
A ~$5,500 Japan Airlines business seat at 60,000 AA miles + $120 is (5,500 − 120) ÷ 60,000 × 100 = 8.97¢ — see it in context in the best sweet spots guide.

These cards earn American AAdvantage miles. See how to get outsized value from them — the partner and off-peak sweet spots that routinely clear 6–10¢/mile: → American to Alaska for 28,000 AAdvantage miles
These are American-only miles — they don't transfer to other airlines. (Citi ThankYou points do transfer into AAdvantage, so a Citi Strata Premier can feed your balance — a rare bridge from a flexible currency into AA.)

Platinum Select — the everyday AA card (~$99, waived yr 1)
- Free first checked bag for you and up to 4 companions on the same reservation — round trip for a family is easily $200+ in avoided fees, dwarfing the fee.
- Preferred boarding (Group 5, ahead of general boarding).
- 2x on American purchases, at restaurants and at gas stations (verify caps).
- Loyalty Points — card spend earns them toward AA's status currency (see below).
- $125 American flight discount after you spend a threshold (~$20,000) in a year (verify).
- 25% back on American inflight purchases (statement credit).
- No foreign transaction fees.
Executive — the Admirals Club card (~$595)
- Full Admirals Club membership — plus lounge access for authorized users you add. If two or more people in your household use AA clubs, this is often cheaper than buying memberships outright.
- 4x on American purchases (tiered — verify current structure).
- Loyalty Points boost — earn status-qualifying Loyalty Points faster, helpful for reaching AAdvantage elite tiers.
- Free first checked bag, priority check-in, screening and boarding.
- Global Entry / TSA PreCheck credit (verify).
Loyalty Points — how AA status works now
American ties elite status to Loyalty Points, and — unlike most airlines — credit-card spend earns them (typically 1 Loyalty Point per dollar, plus flying). That means these Citi cards are a legitimate path toward AAdvantage status, not just miles. The Executive's boost accelerates it. Verify current earning rates and tier thresholds before you plan around them.
Best uses (sweet spots), with examples
1. Off-peak / partner awards are the whole game. Redeem AA miles on JAL, Qatar, British Airways or Cathay business class and you routinely clear 6–10¢/mile. Domestic economy web specials can dip below standard levels, too.
2. Cover the fee with checked bags.
A family of three checking one bag each, round trip: 6 bags × ~$35 = ~$210 avoided — more than the Platinum Select's fee, in a single trip.
3. Feed miles from Citi ThankYou. Hold a Citi Strata Premier and you can transfer ThankYou points into AAdvantage to top up an award — a rare bridge from a flexible currency into AA.
4. Lounge math on the Executive. Two household members who'd each pay for an Admirals Club membership can share one Executive card's membership + authorized-user access, often saving hundreds versus buying two.
Fine print worth knowing
- Free bag requires paying for the ticket with the card and applies to the cardmember plus companions on the same reservation.
- Citi welcome-offer rules limit how often you can earn a new bonus on the same AAdvantage card family — verify your eligibility (there are look-back windows).
- AAdvantage miles expire after 24 months of inactivity, but any earning or redeeming activity — including card spend — resets the clock.
- Award pricing includes standard partner levels and dynamic "web specials"; always run the CPP math before redeeming.
Who should get which
- Fly American occasionally and check a bag: Platinum Select — the free bag alone beats the (waived first-year) fee.
- Fly American often and use the lounge, or want faster status: Executive, especially if you'd share the membership.
- Want flexible points that can become AA miles: pair a Citi Strata Premier with a co-brand and transfer in when an award appears.
Bottom line
AAdvantage is the most valuable U.S. legacy currency at ~1.65¢, and the Citi cards are the practical way in: a free checked bag and status progress on the Platinum Select, or a full Admirals Club membership on the Executive. Because Citi ThankYou points can also transfer to AA, these cards fit neatly alongside a flexible Citi setup — earn broadly, then redeem for a partner business seat that clears well above the miles' face value.
