Best overall: Chase Sapphire Preferred
For a $95 fee, the Sapphire Preferred earns 3x on dining, 2x on other travel and 5x on travel booked through Chase Travel, plus a $100 annual hotel credit through Chase Travel that roughly covers the fee. The real value is the currency: Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to United, Air Canada Aeroplan, British Airways, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Virgin Atlantic, Southwest, World of Hyatt and others. We value Ultimate Rewards at 2.0 cents a point, so 3x on dining works out to about 6% back in travel value. One recent change to know: since June 2026, Hyatt transfers from the Preferred are 4:3 rather than 1:1 (the Reserve keeps 1:1), per our transfer partners guide.
It's also the best points credit card to start with if you plan to add more cards later, because a Chase premium card is what unlocks transfers from the no-fee Freedom cards. Compare it with its closest rivals: Sapphire Preferred vs Venture Rewards, Sapphire Preferred vs Strata Premier and Sapphire Preferred vs Bilt.
Best premium card: Capital One Venture X
The Venture X costs $395, less than half the other premium cards, and gives most of it back if you travel at all: a $300 annual travel credit for bookings through Capital One Travel and 10,000 bonus miles every anniversary. It earns 2x on every purchase, 5x on flights and 10x on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. At our 1.85-cent valuation for Capital One miles, 2x everywhere is about 3.7% back in travel value.
You also get Priority Pass Select and the Capital One Lounges. The lounge benefit got worse for anyone traveling with company on Feb. 1, 2026: guests now cost $45 per adult at Capital One Lounges and $35 at Priority Pass lounges, and authorized users need a $125-a-year add-on. Solo travelers barely notice. See Venture X vs Sapphire Reserve and Venture X vs Amex Platinum.
Best for lounge access: Amex Platinum
No card gets you into more lounges than the Amex Platinum ($895): 16 US Centurion Lounges plus the Las Vegas Sidecar, Priority Pass with two free guests, 10 Delta Sky Club visits a year when you fly Delta, Escape Lounges and Plaza Premium. It earns 5x on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel and on prepaid hotels through Amex Travel, but only 1x on everyday spending, so pair it with a card like the Amex Gold. The fee only makes sense if you use a good share of its credits. Since July 8, 2026, Centurion guests cost $50 per adult and must be on your flight unless you spend $75,000 a year. Best for couples and families: Chase Sapphire Reserve
The Sapphire Reserve ($795) has the best guest policy of the premium cards: two free guests at both its eight Chase Sapphire Lounges and at Priority Pass lounges. Per our Reserve guide it earns 8x on Chase Travel, 4x on flights and hotels booked directly and 3x on dining, with a $300 annual travel credit. Since Aug. 15, 2026 the Sapphire Lounges admit only eligible Chase cardholders, which should mean fewer crowds. See Sapphire Reserve vs Amex Platinum and Preferred vs Reserve.
Best mid-tier alternatives
- Citi Strata Elite ($595): Priority Pass with two free guests, four Admirals Club passes a year, 6x on restaurants Friday and Saturday nights (3x other times) and 1.5x on everything else. Good if you fly American occasionally.
- Citi Strata Premier ($95): 3x on air travel, hotels, dining, supermarkets and gas, with a $100 annual hotel credit. Citi ThankYou points (1.8 cents in our valuations) are the only one of the big four bank currencies that transfers 1:1 to American AAdvantage.
- Amex Gold ($325): 4x at restaurants and US supermarkets (supermarkets capped at $25,000 a year). The best earner of Amex points for a household food budget.
Best no-annual-fee travel cards
The VentureOne earns only 1.25x, but it's one of the few $0 cards whose miles transfer directly to airline and hotel partners, no premium card required. If you rent, the $0 Bilt Blue card from the Bilt lineup earns transferable Bilt points (2.0 cents in our valuations) that move 1:1 to partners including World of Hyatt. For more options, see the full no-annual-fee ranking.
Best for beginners: Capital One Venture Rewards
The Venture Rewards ($95) earns 2x miles on every purchase, plus 5x on hotels and rental cars through Capital One Travel, and adds a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit. There are no categories to remember, and the miles can be used toward any travel purchase or transferred to partners when you're ready. If you want to learn the transfer side, our points and miles explainer and beginner's guide walk through it.
Best airline and hotel co-brand cards
Co-brand cards earn one airline's or hotel's currency instead of flexible points. They make sense when you're loyal to one brand and want perks a bank card can't give, such as free checked bags or a free night.
- United: the United Explorer ($150, $0 the first year) gives a free first checked bag, two United Club passes a year and more saver award space.
- Delta: the Delta SkyMiles Gold ($150) covers a free checked bag; the Delta Reserve ($650) adds 15 Sky Club visits a year and Centurion access on Delta flights.
- American: the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select ($99, $0 intro year) for occasional flyers, or the Citi AAdvantage Executive ($695 for new cardmembers since Aug. 23, 2026) for a full Admirals Club membership. See our Citi AAdvantage guide.
- Alaska and Hawaiian: the Atmos Rewards Summit ($395) includes eight Alaska Lounge passes a year and a Global Companion Award with its current offer.
- Hotels: the World of Hyatt card ($95) for the most valuable hotel points (1.7 cents) and a yearly Category 1–4 free night (guide); the Hilton Honors Aspire ($550) for Hilton Diamond-level perks; the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant ($650) for Marriott stays.

How we pick
- Value of the points, not the number of points. We convert earn rates using our points valuations: 2.0 cents for Chase, Amex and Bilt, 1.85 for Capital One, 1.8 for Citi. A 2x card in a 1.85-cent currency beats a 3x card in a 0.5-cent one.
- Transfer partners. Cards earning transferable points rank higher, because you choose the airline or hotel when you book.
- Fee versus benefits you'll use. We count credits only if a typical traveler would use them without changing habits.
- Lounge and guest rules as of today. 2026 brought big changes to Capital One, Amex and Chase guest policies; our picks reflect them.
- Category fit. For travel spending specifically, see our data-driven best cards for travel spending ranking.
FAQ
What is the best travel credit card right now? For most people, the Chase Sapphire Preferred: a $95 fee, 3x on dining and points that transfer to more than a dozen airline and hotel programs. If you want lounge access, the Venture X ($395) is the best value and the Amex Platinum ($895) has the most lounges.
What is the best travel rewards credit card with no annual fee? The Capital One VentureOne, because its miles transfer to airline partners without needing a premium card. Renters should also look at the $0 Bilt card.
What are the best points credit cards? Cards that earn transferable points: Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Bilt, Capital One miles and Citi ThankYou points. We value them at 1.8 to 2.0 cents each, well above most airline and hotel currencies. See points and miles explained.
Is a premium travel card worth the annual fee? Only if you'll use the credits and lounges. The Venture X is the easiest to justify, since its $300 travel credit and 10,000 anniversary miles offset most of the $395 fee. The $795 and $895 cards need more effort.
Should I get an airline card or a general travel card? A general card with transferable points is the better first card. Add an airline card once you fly one airline enough that free bags, lounge access or companion perks are worth the fee.
