Washington to Europe on Points: Best Award Routes & Cards

By Krit · Updated · How we research

Award prices, routes and transfer ratios change often — search the live price before you move any points.

Washington's European flights almost all leave from Dulles (IAD), a United hub with about 14 year-round European routes on United alone, plus Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels, TAP, Turkish and ITA from Star Alliance, and British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Air France, KLM, Iberia, SAS, Aer Lingus and Icelandair. Neither Delta nor American flies to Europe from Dulles, which makes Star Alliance — and Aeroplan — the default points play for Washington.

Best ways to book

Air Canada Aeroplan

On the 1 June 2026 chart, partner business costs 60,000 one-way up to 4,000 miles and 75,000 for 4,001–6,000 miles; economy is 32,500 / 42,500. From Dulles, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, Lisbon, Madrid and Edinburgh are under 4,000 miles. Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Geneva, Vienna, Rome and Istanbul are over. Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels, TAP and Turkish carry no fuel surcharges on Aeroplan. United's own flights are dynamic in Aeroplan. Feeds: Chase, Amex, Capital One and Bilt at 1:1.

United MileagePlus

The Dulles hub carrier, with no fuel surcharges and free changes — but business runs about 80,000 one-way on United and around 88,000 on partners, with economy about 26,000–27,000 (2026 figures). United cardholders get a 10–15% discount and more saver space. Feeds: Chase and Bilt at 1:1.

Air France/KLM Flying Blue

Business from 60,000 and economy from about 25,000, both dynamic; Promo Rewards knock 25% off select gateways each month. Business taxes are roughly $300–$350 each way. Feeds: Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi and Bilt at 1:1.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Virgin's own Dulles–London Upper Class is dynamic from about 29,000 points one-way, and it's the most useful Virgin redemption here. Delta doesn't fly to Europe from Dulles, and Virgin prices each segment separately, so Delta One connections via New York or Atlanta add up quickly. Feeds: Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi and Bilt at 1:1.

Avios: Iberia, Aer Lingus, British Airways

Iberia's Dulles–Madrid business prices around 50,500 Avios off-peak (59,000 peak) with moderate fees. Aer Lingus to Dublin runs 50,000 Avios off-peak, or about 45,000 on Atmos. BA's Club World is expensive in fees after its December 2025 repricing (88,000 Avios off-peak one-way in the most-Avios option on the New York route). Avios feeds: Chase, Amex and Bilt; Capital One via BA; Citi via Qatar. Atmos feed: Bilt.

Turkish Miles&Smiles

Turkish's own business class to Istanbul is about 65,000 one-way; partner awards run 85,000–90,000, so stick to Turkish metal. Feeds: Capital One, Citi and Bilt at 1:1.

Sweet spots from Washington

  • Aeroplan to Lisbon on TAP, or Brussels on Brussels Airlines (summer), for 60,000. Both are under 4,000 miles from Dulles and carry no fuel surcharges — the cheapest Star Alliance business seats from Washington.
  • Aer Lingus to Dublin for about 45,000 on Atmos. Dublin is the closest European city to Dulles, with US preclearance on the way home.
  • Iberia to Madrid around 50,500 Avios. Much lower fees than BA.
  • Flying Blue Promo Rewards. When Dulles is included, economy can drop below 20,000.

Taxes & surcharges

Star Alliance awards through Aeroplan, United or LifeMiles carry no fuel surcharges, which is a big reason Aeroplan suits Dulles. Flying Blue adds roughly $300–$350 each way in business; BA adds the most. Leaving London costs more than arriving because of UK departure tax. Note that Lufthansa has released no First award space to partners since 1 June 2026 — business is unaffected.

FAQ

What's the best points program for Washington to Europe? Aeroplan. Dulles is dominated by United and Star Alliance partners, and Aeroplan prices partner business at 60,000–75,000 one-way with no fuel surcharges.

Can I fly Delta or American to Europe from Washington? Not nonstop from Dulles. You'd connect through New York, Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia or Charlotte, or fly their partners (Air France, KLM, Virgin, BA, Iberia) nonstop.

Why does Frankfurt cost more than London on Aeroplan from Dulles? Aeroplan prices by distance. Frankfurt and Munich sit just over 4,000 miles from Dulles, which moves them into the 75,000 band; London is about 3,670 miles.

Should I transfer to United or Aeroplan? Usually Aeroplan for partner flights, because United charges about 88,000 for the same partner seat. For United's own flights, compare both — and remember United cardholders see extra saver space.
