Best Credit Cards & Lounge Access for Washington Dulles (IAD) Flyers

By Krit · Updated · How we research

Lounge access rules change often — confirm in the lounge's app or the card's benefits page before you fly.

Dulles is United's Washington hub and the region's long-haul gateway. The best credit card for Washington flyers leaving from IAD depends on whether you fly United, but IAD lounge access through bank cards is better than most people expect: a full Capital One Lounge, the Etihad Lounge that Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders can use, and several Priority Pass lounges. There is no Centurion Lounge at IAD.

Quick answer

  • Best overall for IAD lounge access: Chase Sapphire Reserve — the partner Etihad Lounge on Concourse A plus Priority Pass IAD lounges
  • Best for the Etihad Lounge (Chase partner): Chase Sapphire Reserve — two free guests per visit
  • Best value for Priority Pass + Capital One Lounge: Capital One Venture X — the main-terminal Capital One Lounge is the one lounge every passenger passes on the way in
  • Best for frequent United flyers: United Club card with United Club access on Concourses C and D
  • Amex Platinum at IAD: no Centurion Lounge and no Delta Sky Club, so it is limited to Priority Pass lounges such as the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse and Turkish Airlines lounge

Airport snapshot

United dominates Dulles from Concourses C and D, with regional flights on E. Foreign airlines use Concourses A and B, which is where the Chase-partner Etihad Lounge and most Priority Pass lounges are. The Capital One Lounge is in the main terminal right after security, before the AeroTrain, so it works for every concourse. All concourses connect airside, but the A gates are a long trip from United's C and D gates. Reagan National is the closer-in alternative for domestic trips.

Where to go by terminal

Terminal Airlines Lounges there
Main Terminal All (after security) Capital One Lounge
Concourse A Foreign airlines Etihad Lounge (Chase partner), Air France–KLM, Virgin Clubhouse
Concourse B Foreign airlines Turkish, British Airways; Lufthansa closed for renovation
Concourses C and D United United Clubs (C7, C17, D8), Polaris
Concourse E United regional United Club and Gameway listed as coming soon

Every concourse connects after security by AeroTrain or walkway, but A is a long trip from United's C and D gates.

  • If you fly United often from IAD: The United Club card. Add Venture X if you also want the Capital One Lounge on the way in.

  • If you want strong lounges at a lower cost: Venture X, at $395, is the clear pick for Dulles.
  • If you also fly from Reagan National: Venture X covers the Capital One Landing at DCA too.

No card? Day passes & other options

The Capital One Lounge sells $90 day passes and United Clubs sell $59 passes, both subject to capacity. The Air France–KLM lounge sells passes to Air France, KLM and Delta passengers.

FAQ

Is there a Centurion Lounge at Dulles? No. Amex Platinum holders at IAD rely on Priority Pass lounges and the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse. There is also no Delta Sky Club at Dulles.

Where is the Capital One Lounge at Dulles? In the main terminal on the ticketing level, right after TSA PreCheck between the East and West checkpoints, before you board the AeroTrain.

Can I use the Chase partner lounge at Dulles if I'm flying United? Usually, with your Sapphire Reserve card and an eligible departing boarding pass, as long as you have time to get to Concourse A and back to your gate.

Amex Platinum vs Sapphire Reserve vs Venture X: which is best at IAD? Venture X for value, because the Capital One Lounge is right after security. The Sapphire Reserve is close behind and better with companions, thanks to two free guests at the Etihad Lounge. The Platinum is the weakest here: no Centurion Lounge and no Sky Club, only Priority Pass.
