Card terms change often — confirm the current fee, credits and offer on the issuer's page before you apply.

The best premium credit card for most people in 2026 is the Capital One Venture X. Its own credits cover the $395 fee, it earns 2x on everything, and it gets you into lounges. If you travel with a partner, the Chase Sapphire Reserve is the better pick. If you'll use a long list of monthly credits and want the most lounges, choose the Amex Platinum. If most of your flights are on one airline, that airline's club card usually beats all of them. Below, we compare every card with a fee of $395 or more on what it really costs after the credits you'll actually use.

The general-purpose premium cards

These four earn transferable points that move to many airlines and hotels. For most people, the choice is between them.

Capital One Venture X: best value ($395)

The Venture X has a $300 Capital One Travel credit and 10,000 anniversary miles (worth $100 at the 1¢ floor). Together they offset the fee, so the net cost is about $0. It earns 2x on everything, which is 3.7% back in travel at our 1.85¢ valuation, and 10x on hotels and cars booked through Capital One Travel. You get Capital One Lounges (DFW, DEN, IAD, JFK, LAS, plus Landings at LGA and DCA) and Priority Pass.

The catch is guests. Since February 1, 2026, a guest costs $45 per adult at Capital One Lounges (free after $75,000 in spend) and $35 at Priority Pass. Authorized users need a $125-a-year add-on for lounge access. Read more: Venture X guide · Is the Venture X worth it?

Chase Sapphire Reserve: best for travel with a companion ($795)

The Reserve has a $300 travel credit that applies automatically to any travel purchase. It also offers up to $500 a year at The Edit hotels, $300 in dining credits and a long list of lifestyle perks. Count the travel credit plus partial value from the dining, DoorDash, Lyft and Apple perks and the net cost is about $240; one prepaid Edit stay takes it to about −$10. It earns 8x on Chase Travel, 4x on flights and hotels booked direct and 3x on dining. Points are worth 2.0¢ to us, largely because they transfer to Hyatt and United.

It has the best guest policy of the bank cards: two free guests at the 8 Sapphire Lounges and at Priority Pass. Sapphire Lounges left Priority Pass on August 15, 2026, so only Chase cardholders get in. It also has the strongest insurance, including primary rental-car coverage. Amex Platinum: biggest lounge network ($895)

The Platinum gets you into Centurion Lounges at 16 US airports and Priority Pass with two free guests. You also get 10 Delta Sky Club visits a year when you fly Delta (unlimited after $75,000 in spend), plus Escape and Plaza Premium. Since July 8, 2026, Centurion guests must be on your flight and cost $50 per adult and $30 per child, free after $75,000 in spend. The Lufthansa lounge benefit ended October 1, 2026.

The credits are long: airline fees, $600 in hotels, $400 Resy, Uber, streaming, Lululemon, Oura, Walmart+ and CLEAR. Most come in monthly or quarterly pieces. A typical user gets about $470 back, for a net cost of about $425; one prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts stay brings it to about $125. Earning is weak outside airfare (1x on everything else). Citi Strata Elite: best for dining and American Airlines transfers ($595)

The Strata Elite earns 6x on dining on Friday and Saturday nights (about 10.8% back at our 1.8¢ valuation), 3x on other dining, 12x on Citi Travel hotels and 1.5x on everything else. Its credits are a $300 hotel credit, a $200 Splurge credit (American Airlines and Best Buy are among the options) and a $200 Blacklane credit. Count the Splurge credit in full and the portal-only hotel credit at half and the net cost is about $245, or $95 if you use the hotel credit in full. You get Priority Pass with two free guests and four Admirals Club passes a year. Citi is also the only major bank currency that transfers to American AAdvantage. Amex Business Platinum ($895)

The Business Platinum has the same lounge access as the personal Platinum, but different credits: Dell, Indeed, Adobe, wireless, a $600 hotel credit and others. It earns 2x on purchases of $5,000 or more. It also has a 35% Pay with Points airfare rebate on your selected airline, which puts a floor of about 1.54¢ under each point when you book paid flights. Get it only if your business really uses those credits. Read more: Business Platinum guide

Airline club cards

If 80% of your flights are on one airline out of its hub, an airline card usually beats the bank cards there. Airline clubs are at most gate areas of a hub, while bank lounges are in one terminal at a handful of airports.

  • Delta SkyMiles Reserve ($650): 15 Sky Club visits a year (unlimited after $75,000 in spend), Centurion Lounge access when you fly Delta on a ticket bought with the card, an annual companion certificate valid in First, Comfort+ or Main, and the biggest MQD boost toward Medallion status. See Delta Sky Club access.
  • Citi AAdvantage Executive ($695 for new accounts since August 23, 2026): a full Admirals Club membership for you and guests or immediate family. Up to three authorized users cost $175 total, and each gets their own access. Card spending earns Loyalty Points toward AAdvantage status. See Admirals Club access.
  • United Club card ($695): a full United Club membership with guests. See United Club access and our United MileagePlus guide.
  • Atmos Rewards Summit ($395): eight Alaska Lounge passes a year (two per quarter, each for one adult plus up to two children). It also waives Atmos's $20 partner-award booking fee. See the Alaska cards guide.

Premium hotel cards

Hotel points are worth less per point (Hilton 0.5¢, Marriott 0.8¢ to us), but these cards earn them fast. Treat them as status-and-free-night cards that you carry alongside a transferable-points card.

What each card really costs

Here's each fee minus the credits a typical person actually uses, not the issuer's headline totals. Our rules: a general travel credit counts in full; monthly rideshare and dining credits count at partial value; a portal credit for any hotel counts at half; luxury-collection hotel credits (Fine Hotels + Resorts, The Edit, Renowned Hotels), and niche credits like Blacklane, StubHub, Lululemon or Oura, count at $0. Lounge access isn't in the net. The last column shows what happens if you also take one eligible hotel stay or use the card's certificate.

Card Fee Credits a typical user uses Net With one stay or certificate
Venture X $395 $300 travel + 10k miles ($100) = $400 ~$0 −$90 with miles at 1.85¢
Sapphire Reserve $795 $300 travel + $75 dining + $60 DoorDash + $60 Lyft + $60 Apple = $555 ~$240 −$10 (one Edit stay)
Strata Elite $595 $150 hotel (half) + $200 Splurge = $350 ~$245 $95 (hotel credit in full)
Hilton Aspire $550 $200 resort + $100 flight = $300 ~$250 −$250 (free night at $500)
Delta Reserve $650 $120 Resy + $100 Delta Stays + $60 rideshare = $280 ~$370 −$30 (companion certificate at $400)
Atmos Rewards Summit $395 none counted ~$395 —
Marriott Brilliant $650 $240 dining ~$410 −$90 (free night at $500)
Amex Platinum $895 $200 Resy + $120 streaming + $100 Uber + $50 airline = $470 ~$425 $125 (one FHR stay)
United Club card $695 $75 rideshare + $80 Instacart + $30 Avis/Budget = $185 ~$510 — (buys a $750 club membership)
Citi AAdvantage Executive $695 $60 Lyft + $50 inflight/Admirals + $40 Avis/Budget = $150 ~$545 — (buys a $750–$1,400 club membership)

The airline club cards look expensive here because their main value, the lounge membership, isn't a credit. Judge them against what the club would cost you to buy.

Then compare earning. On $20,000 of everyday, non-bonus spending: the Venture X earns about $740, the Strata Elite $540, and the Reserve and Platinum $400 each. The Venture X wins this by a wide margin.

Card-vs-card comparisons

FAQ

What is the best premium credit card in 2026? For most people, the Capital One Venture X. Its credit and anniversary miles cover the $395 fee, it earns 2x on everything, and it includes lounge access. The Sapphire Reserve is better if you travel with a companion. The Amex Platinum is better if you'll use its credits and want the most lounges.

Is a premium credit card worth the annual fee? Only if the credits you'd use anyway, plus the lounge and earning value, add up to more than the fee. Our typical-user math puts the net cost at about $0 for the Venture X, $240 for the Sapphire Reserve, $245 for the Strata Elite and $425 for the Amex Platinum. One eligible hotel stay brings those to about −$10, $95 and $125 for the last three.

Which premium card has the most lounge access? The Amex Platinum (and Business Platinum), which combine Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass, Delta Sky Club visits on Delta flights, Escape and Plaza Premium.

Which premium card is best for authorized users? For lounge access, the Citi Strata Elite is the cheapest at a reported $75 per user with their own Priority Pass. The Venture X is free to add users, with lounge access at $125 each. The Platinum and Reserve charge $195 per user. The Citi AAdvantage Executive covers up to three users for $175 total, each with Admirals Club access.

Should I get an airline card or a bank card? If most of your flights are on one airline from its hub, get the airline card for full club access at every gate area. If you fly several airlines, a bank card with transferable points and Priority Pass is more flexible.

Can I have more than one premium card? Yes, and some travelers pair them, for example a Platinum for Centurion Lounges and a Venture X for 2x everyday earning. Just remember the fees add up.
