The Capital One Venture X is the low-fee premium card. Its credit and anniversary miles cover the $395 fee, and it earns 2x on everything. The Citi Strata Elite costs $200 more and pays it back through bigger dining multipliers, free Priority Pass guests and American Airlines perks. Our verdict: the Venture X is the better pick for most people, and the clear pick for solo travelers. The Strata Elite is better for couples who use Priority Pass together and for American Airlines flyers.

Annual fee and real cost
Venture X, $395. The $300 credit only works in Capital One Travel. Use it once and count the 10,000 anniversary miles at the 1¢ floor ($100), and you get $400 back. That's a net cost of −$5, about $0. At our 1.85¢ valuation, the miles are worth $185, which puts you about $90 ahead.
Citi Strata Elite, $595. The $200 Splurge credit works at up to two brands you pick, including American Airlines and Best Buy, so count it in full. The $300 hotel credit needs one prepaid stay of two or more nights through Citi Travel; portal rates can run above booking direct and you give up hotel points, so we count it at half, $150. Count the Blacklane chauffeur credit as $0 unless you already use car service. That's $595 − $350 = about $245, or about $95 if you use the hotel credit in full.
Guest fees can change this math. With the Venture X, a guest costs $35 per Priority Pass visit and $45 per adult at Capital One Lounges, unless you spend $75,000 a year. Three Priority Pass visits a year with one guest adds $105, taking the Venture X to about $100, still well under the Strata Elite's $245. It takes about seven guest visits a year before the Strata Elite's free guests close the gap (or about three if you'd use its hotel credit in full).
Earning
At our values (Capital One 1.85¢, ThankYou 1.8¢):
- Everyday spend: Venture X 2x = 3.7%. Strata Elite 1.5x = 2.7%. On $30,000 of non-bonus spend, that's about $1,110 vs. $810.
- Dining: Strata Elite 6x on Friday and Saturday from 6pm to 6am (10.8%) and 3x at other times (5.4%). Venture X 3.7%.
- Portal travel: both pay 10x or more on portal hotels and cars (Venture X 10x, Strata Elite 12x). Flights earn 5x vs. 6x.
If you spend $1,000 or more a month at restaurants, the Strata Elite earns more on dining. For most other spending, the Venture X does.
Redeeming and transfer partners
The two partner lists overlap a lot: Flying Blue, Avios, Avianca LifeMiles, Turkish, Cathay, Emirates, Etihad, EVA, Qantas, Singapore, Virgin Atlantic, Wyndham, Accor and Choice. See the transfer partners chart.
- Only at Capital One: Air Canada Aeroplan, Finnair and TAP. You can also erase any travel charge at 1¢ per mile, which is the simplest floor of either card.
- Only at Citi: American AAdvantage, JetBlue and Leading Hotels of the World. AA miles are worth 1.65¢ to us, which is why Citi is the stronger card for American flyers.
Some transfer ratios are below 1:1 (for example, Capital One to EVA and Accor), so check the chart before you move points.
Lounge access
- Venture X: unlimited Capital One Lounge, Landing and Priority Pass access for the cardholder. Capital One Lounges are at DFW, DEN, IAD, JFK and LAS, and the Landings are at LGA and DCA. Since February 1, 2026, guests cost $45 per adult and $25 per child at Capital One Lounges, unless you spend $75,000 a year, and $35 at Priority Pass. Authorized users need a $125-a-year add-on for lounge access. See Capital One Lounge locations.
- Strata Elite: Priority Pass Select with two free guests, and authorized users get their own Priority Pass. You also get four Admirals Club passes per calendar year, each good for 24 hours with a same-day oneworld itinerary. See Admirals Club access.
Priority Pass on both cards covers lounges only, not restaurants. The Venture X's own lounges are generally nicer than a typical Priority Pass lounge, but they're only at seven airports. See Priority Pass lounges in the USA.
Travel perks and protections
- Venture X: primary rental-car coverage, trip cancellation and interruption, trip delay, lost luggage, cell phone protection, Hertz President's Circle status and a Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit.
- Strata Elite: trip cancellation and interruption, trip delay, lost or damaged luggage, Mastercard MasterRental coverage, extended warranty and a Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit of up to $120.
