The Chase Sapphire Reserve is the premium card for travelers who want the strongest trip insurance, Hyatt transfers and generous lounge guest rules. The Citi Strata Elite is $200 cheaper and better for weekend diners, everyday spenders and American Airlines flyers. Our verdict: get the Strata Elite if you mainly want earning and Priority Pass. Get the Reserve if you travel with a companion, book Hyatt, or care about primary rental-car coverage.

Annual fee and real cost

Sapphire Reserve, $795. The $300 travel credit applies automatically to any travel purchase, so treat it as cash. Add partial value from the everyday perks: $75 of the $300 Exclusive Tables dining credit (a short list of restaurants), $60 of DoorDash, $60 of the $120 Lyft credit and $60 for Apple TV+ or Apple Music if you'd pay for one. That's $555 back, a net cost of about $240. The Edit's $500 needs prepaid luxury stays of two or more nights, so we count it at $0; one $250 Edit stay takes the net to about −$10. Peloton, StubHub and the Chase Travel hotel credit only add value if you'd use them anyway.

Citi Strata Elite, $595. The $200 Splurge credit works at up to two brands you choose, including American Airlines and Best Buy, so count it in full. One two-night prepaid Citi Travel stay uses the $300 hotel credit; portal rates can run above booking direct and you give up hotel points, so we count it at half, $150. Count the Blacklane car-service credit as $0 unless you already use it. That's $595 − $350 = about $245 net, or about $95 with the hotel credit used in full.

Both cards land at roughly the same net cost, about $240 vs. $245. With one hotel stay on each, the Reserve pulls ahead (about −$10 vs. $95), but the stays are different: the Reserve needs a luxury Edit hotel, while the Strata Elite takes any hotel on Citi Travel.

Earning

At our point values (UR 2.0¢, ThankYou 1.8¢):

  • Everyday spend: Strata Elite 1.5x = 2.7%. Reserve 1x = 2%. On $20,000, that's about $540 vs. $400.
  • Dining: Reserve 3x = 6% at any time. Strata Elite earns 10.8% on Friday and Saturday from 6pm to 6am and 5.4% at other times. If you eat out mostly on weekend nights, the Strata Elite wins. If you eat out mostly on weekday lunches, the Reserve does.
  • Flights booked direct: Reserve 4x = 8%. Strata Elite 1.5x unless you book through Citi Travel (6x).
  • Portal hotels: Strata Elite 12x (21.6%) vs. Reserve 8x through Chase Travel (16%).

Redeeming and transfer partners

See the transfer partners chart for every ratio.

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards: World of Hyatt, the best hotel transfer of any bank, plus United, Southwest, Aeroplan, Flying Blue, Avios, Virgin Atlantic, Singapore, JetBlue, IHG and Marriott. Chase Travel pays 1¢ per point for new cardholders, or up to 2¢ on select Points Boost bookings.
  • Citi ThankYou: American AAdvantage, which no other major bank offers, plus Turkish, EVA, Qantas, Cathay, Flying Blue, Avios, Singapore and Virgin Atlantic. Hotel partners are Wyndham, Accor and Choice. Citi has no Hyatt.

The choice usually comes down to Hyatt (Chase) or American (Citi). We value UR higher at 2.0¢ vs. 1.8¢, mostly because of Hyatt and United.

Lounge access

  • Sapphire Reserve: Sapphire Lounges at BOS, DFW, JFK, LGA, LAS, PHL, PHX and SAN, with two free guests and then $27 per guest. You can arrive up to 3 hours before departure, or 5 hours on a connection. Sapphire Lounges left Priority Pass on August 15, 2026, so they're Chase-only now. Priority Pass is included too, with two free guests (lounges only). See Chase Sapphire Lounge locations.
  • Strata Elite: Priority Pass Select with two free guests, and authorized users get their own membership. You also get four Admirals Club passes per calendar year, each good for 24 hours with a same-day oneworld itinerary. Check whether a pass covers guests before you rely on it. See Admirals Club access.

If your home airport has a Sapphire Lounge, the Reserve is better. If you fly American out of DFW, ORD, CLT or MIA a few times a year, the Admirals passes are useful. Check Priority Pass lounges in the USA for what's near you.

Travel perks and protections

  • Sapphire Reserve: primary rental-car collision coverage, trip cancellation and interruption, trip delay, baggage delay and lost luggage, with the highest limits in Chase's lineup. Also IHG Platinum Elite status and a Global Entry/TSA PreCheck/NEXUS credit.
  • Strata Elite: trip cancellation and interruption, trip delay, lost luggage, Mastercard MasterRental coverage, extended warranty and a Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit of up to $120.

If insurance matters to you, the Reserve is the safer choice.

Who should get which

  • Travels as a couple or family: Sapphire Reserve, for the free guests at Sapphire Lounges.
  • Hyatt fan: Sapphire Reserve.
  • Flies American and wants AAdvantage transfers: Strata Elite.
  • Puts most spending on one card: Strata Elite (1.5x everywhere).
  • Rents cars often: Sapphire Reserve (primary coverage).
