Chase Sapphire Reserve vs United Club Card: Which Chase Card?

Card terms, credits and lounge rules change often — confirm on the issuer's page before you apply.

Both cards come from Chase, and Chase points move 1:1 into United miles, so this is a real choice for United flyers. The Chase Sapphire Reserve is a flexible travel card: transferable points, Priority Pass, Chase Sapphire Lounges and strong trip insurance on any airline. The United Club card is a United membership in card form: unlimited United Club visits with a guest, two free checked bags and Premier Qualifying Points. Verdict: if you fly United for most trips and use the lounge, get the United Club card. If United is one airline among several, get the Reserve and transfer points to United when you need to.

Quick answer

  • Pick the Sapphire Reserve if: you fly a mix of airlines, want points that transfer to Hyatt, United, Air Canada and more, and want lounges outside United's network.
  • Pick the United Club card if: you fly United from a hub and want a United Club every time, free bags for two, and help reaching Premier status.
  • Winner for lounges: United Club card for United hubs, where there are no Sapphire Lounges (Dulles has a Chase partner lounge only). Reserve for everywhere else.
  • Winner for everyday earning: Sapphire Reserve. Its points are worth ~2.0¢ versus ~1.35¢ for United miles, and it earns 4x on flights booked directly, including United tickets.
  • Winner on net cost: Sapphire Reserve on credits alone (about $240 vs. $510). But the United Club card's net buys a club membership United sells for $750 plus free bags for two, so a United loyalist who'd pay for those comes out ahead with it.

Annual fee and real cost

Sapphire Reserve ($795), conservative use:

  • $300 travel credit (automatic on travel spend): $300
  • Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables dining (up to $300, $150 per half-year, short restaurant list): $75
  • DoorDash promos (up to $300): $60
  • Lyft (up to $120, $10 a month): $60
  • Apple TV+ and Apple Music (~$250): $60 if you'd pay for one of them
  • The Edit hotel credit (up to $500, two $250 credits a year, prepaid luxury stays): $0 unless you book one; one stay adds $250
  • StubHub, Peloton, Chase Travel hotel credit: $0 unless you'd use them

Total $555, so $795 − $555 = $240, or about −$10 with one Edit stay. Most of that comes from the $300 travel credit.

United Club card ($695), conservative use:

  • Instacart (up to $240; ends 12/31/27): $80
  • Rideshare (up to $150): $75
  • Avis/Budget (up to $100): $30
  • Renowned Hotels & Resorts (up to $200, prepaid luxury stays): $0 unless you book one
  • JSX (up to $200): $0 for most people

Total $185, so $695 − $185 = $510 net. That buys a club membership United sells for $750 (you only) or $1,400 (All Access), plus two free bags for you and a companion, which Chase values at up to $440 per round trip.

For a United loyalist who checks bags, the Club card's value is concentrated in things they already pay for. Beyond its $300 travel credit, the Reserve's value depends on hotel and dining credits you have to plan around.

Earning

  • United tickets: the Reserve earns 4x on flights booked directly with the airline. At 2.0¢ that's 8% back, and those points can still go to United later. The Club card earns 5x on other United purchases such as seats and bag fees, and Chase quotes up to 11x on United flights once MileagePlus flying miles are included. You earn the flying miles with either card, so the card-only comparison favors the Reserve.
  • Dining: Reserve 3x (6%) versus Club card 2x (2.7%).
  • Other travel: Reserve 8x through Chase Travel, 4x on hotels booked direct; Club card 2x.
  • Status: only the Club card helps. 1,500 bonus PQP a year plus 1 PQP per $15 spent, up to 28,000 PQP, counting toward Premier status up to 1K. Reserve spending earns no PQP.

Redeeming and transfer partners

Ultimate Rewards transfer 1:1 to United MileagePlus, plus World of Hyatt, Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Singapore, Southwest and others. That makes the Reserve a United card when you want it to be. Chase Travel redemptions are 1.0¢ base for new cardholders, with Points Boost up to 2¢ on select bookings.

MileagePlus miles never expire, have free cancellations and no close-in fees, and United cardmembers get at least 10% off United award prices (15% for Premier members). The Club card also gives a 10,000-mile award discount after $20,000 of spending, up to twice a year.

See the transfer partners chart and our points valuations.

Lounge access

Sapphire Reserve: Priority Pass Select, lounges only (no restaurant credits). Chase Sapphire Lounges at Boston, Dallas Fort Worth, JFK, LaGuardia, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Phoenix and San Diego, plus a partner lounge with Etihad at Washington Dulles. Two guests free, then $27 each. Since August 15, 2026 those lounges no longer take Priority Pass from other banks' cards. No United Clubs. See Chase Sapphire Lounge locations.

United Club card: membership for you, one adult guest and children under 18. Premier Gold or $50,000 of calendar-year spending unlocks All Access, adding a second adult guest and Star Alliance lounges. No Polaris lounges. See United Club access.

The geography matters. United's hubs at Chicago, Denver, Houston, Newark, San Francisco and Los Angeles have no Sapphire Lounge, and Priority Pass options there vary a lot by terminal, so a lounge may not be on your side of security. At Dulles, the Etihad partner lounge is in Concourse A while most United flights use C and D. Check the ORD, DEN, EWR and SFO pages before you assume the Reserve covers your home airport.

Travel perks and protections

  • Sapphire Reserve: primary rental-car collision coverage, trip cancellation and interruption, trip delay and baggage coverage (Chase's highest limits), Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, IHG Platinum Elite status (through 2027).
  • United Club card: first and second checked bags free for you and one companion on United, Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, 25% back on inflight purchases and premium Club drinks.

Both have no foreign transaction fees. The Reserve's insurance applies whatever airline you fly.

Who should get which

  • United for nearly every trip, lounge most trips: United Club card.
  • United sometimes, other airlines often: Sapphire Reserve, transferring to United as needed.
  • Want both flexible points and United perks for less: a Chase Sapphire Preferred ($95) plus the United Explorer ($150) gives transferable points, a free bag and two club passes a year for $245.
  • Heavy traveler who wants everything: some hold both. Chase's 5/24 rule applies to each application, so plan the order.

FAQ

Does the Chase Sapphire Reserve get me into United Clubs? No. The Reserve's lounge benefits are Priority Pass and Chase Sapphire Lounges. For United Clubs you need the United Club card, a paid membership, a one-time pass, status on an international Star Alliance trip, or a qualifying premium ticket.

Can I transfer Sapphire Reserve points to United? Yes, 1:1 and usually instantly. That's why many United flyers prefer the Reserve's flexibility unless they need the lounge and bags.

Which card earns more on United flights? On a card-only basis, the Reserve: 4x Ultimate Rewards (about 8% at our valuation) versus 5x on other United purchases on the Club card (about 6.75%). Chase's "up to 11x" for the Club card includes the miles you earn for flying, which you'd get with either card.

Can I hold both cards? Yes. They're different product families, but Chase's 5/24 rule applies to each application.

Is the United Club card cheaper than buying a membership? Yes. United's Individual membership is $750 with no guests; the card is $695 (about $510 after the credits a typical user would spend) and includes a guest, plus two free checked bags.
