The Amex Platinum is for travelers who will work a long list of monthly credits and want the biggest lounge network. The Chase Sapphire Reserve is for people who travel with a companion and want the best trip insurance and Hyatt transfers. The Capital One Venture X is for anyone who wants lounges and solid earning without managing credits. Our verdict: the Venture X is the best value for most people, the Reserve is the best for couples and families, and the Platinum wins only if you'll really use its credits.

Annual fee and real cost
Stated credit totals are marketing. Here's what a typical traveler, not a perfect optimizer, actually gets back.
Amex Platinum, $895. Counting what most people use without changing habits: $200 of the $400 Resy credit, $120 of the $300 streaming credit (one service you already pay for), $100 of the $200 Uber Cash, and $50 of the $200 airline fee credit (bags and seats on one airline, not tickets). That's $470, so the net cost is $895 − $470 = $425. The $600 hotel credit needs prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or Hotel Collection stays, so we count it at $0; one $300 stay brings the net to $125. Lululemon, Oura, Walmart+, Uber One and CLEAR ($219) count only if you'd buy them anyway.
Sapphire Reserve, $795. The $300 travel credit works almost like cash because it applies automatically to any travel purchase. Add partial value from the everyday perks: $75 of the $300 Exclusive Tables dining credit, $60 of DoorDash, $60 of the $120 Lyft credit and $60 for Apple TV+ or Apple Music if you'd pay for one. That's $555 back, so the net cost is $795 − $555 = $240. The Edit's $500 needs prepaid luxury stays, so we count it at $0; one $250 Edit stay takes the net to about −$10. StubHub, Peloton and the Chase Travel hotel credit are extra if you'd use them anyway.
Venture X, $395. Use the $300 Capital One Travel credit and count the 10,000 anniversary miles at the 1¢ floor ($100), and you get $400 back. Net cost: $395 − $400 = −$5, about $0. At our 1.85¢ valuation, the miles are worth $185, which puts the card ahead by about $90 a year.
Before you count lounge visits at all, the Venture X costs roughly $430 less per year than the Platinum, and the Reserve ($240) sits in between. With one eligible hotel stay on each, the gap narrows to about $130 (Platinum $125, Reserve −$10, Venture X about $0). How we count each credit: our net-cost method.
Earning
At our valuations, here's the return per dollar in travel value:
- Everyday spend: Venture X 2x = 3.7%. Platinum and Reserve 1x = 2%. On $20,000 of non-bonus spend, that's about $740 with the Venture X versus $400 with either of the others.
- Dining: Reserve 3x = 6%. Venture X 3.7%. Platinum 2%.
- Flights: Platinum 5x on flights booked direct = 10%. Reserve 4x direct = 8%, or 8x through Chase Travel. Venture X 5x through Capital One Travel only.
- Hotels: Venture X 10x and Reserve 8x through their portals, the Platinum 5x on prepaid Amex Travel hotels.
The Platinum earns very little outside airfare, so most people pair it with an Amex Gold. The Venture X is the only one of the three that works as an all-purpose card.
Redeeming and transfer partners
All three currencies transfer to airlines and hotels, mostly at 1:1. See the full transfer chart.
- Amex Membership Rewards (2.0¢): the biggest airline list, including Delta, ANA, Flying Blue, Aeroplan, Avios, Virgin Atlantic and Singapore. Hilton transfers at 1:2. Amex charges a small excise-tax fee on transfers to US airlines.
- Chase Ultimate Rewards (2.0¢): the only one with World of Hyatt and United, plus Southwest, Aeroplan, Flying Blue and Avios. Chase Travel pays 1¢ per point for new cardholders, or up to 2¢ on select Points Boost bookings.
- Capital One miles (1.85¢): Turkish, Flying Blue, Avios, Aeroplan, Emirates and Wyndham. You can also wipe any travel charge at 1¢ per mile, which is the simplest floor of the three.
If you want Hyatt, choose Chase. If you want Delta or ANA, choose Amex. If you'd rather not research awards, Capital One's travel eraser is the easiest.
Lounge access
- Amex Platinum: Centurion Lounges at 16 US airports, Priority Pass (lounges only, 2 free guests), 10 Delta Sky Club visits a year when you fly Delta (unlimited after $75,000 in spend), plus Escape and Plaza Premium. Since July 8, 2026, Centurion guests must be on your flight and cost $50 per adult and $30 per child, free after $75,000 in spend. The Lufthansa lounge benefit ended October 1, 2026. See Centurion Lounge locations.
- Sapphire Reserve: 8 Sapphire Lounges (BOS, DFW, JFK — currently limited operations — LGA, LAS, PHL, PHX, SAN) plus Priority Pass. Two guests free at both, then $27 each at Sapphire Lounges. Sapphire Lounges left Priority Pass on August 15, 2026, so only Chase cardholders get in. See Chase Sapphire Lounge locations.
- Venture X: 5 Capital One Lounges and 2 Landings plus Priority Pass, unlimited for the cardholder. Since February 1, 2026, guests cost $45 per adult ($25 per child) at Capital One Lounges unless you spend $75,000, and $35 at Priority Pass. See Capital One Lounge locations.
To see which lounges are at your home airport, start with best cards for airport lounge access or a page like DFW lounges, where all three brands are in Terminal D.
