The Gulf big three
- Emirates → Dubai (DXB). The A380 with the onboard shower spa in First and a walk-up bar. Book with Emirates Skywards, fed by Amex, Capital One and Citi — Chase ended its Emirates partnership on October 16, 2025, and Amex and Citi now transfer at a reduced ~1:0.8 rate. - Etihad → Abu Dhabi (AUH). The First Apartment — a private room with a separate seat and bed — is one of the most exclusive products flying. Book with Etihad Guest. Surcharges are high but usually below Emirates. See the Etihad First Apartment report.

1. Qatar Qsuite via Avios — the best overall. A ~$4,800 round-trip business seat books at 88,000 Avios each way (176,000 round trip) + $560: (4,800 − 560) ÷ 176,000 × 100 = 2.41¢ per Avios. Time a 30% Amex → Qatar transfer bonus and the same award costs only ~135,400 Amex points — (4,800 − 560) ÷ 135,400 × 100 = 3.13¢ per Amex point. 2. Etihad First Apartment — the showpiece. A ~$10,000 first-class fare books near 100,000 Etihad Guest miles + ~$400: (10,000 − 400) ÷ 100,000 × 100 = 9.6¢ per mile. The Apartment is a genuine private room — see the First Apartment report. Note that Etihad Guest is now fed by Capital One, Citi and Bilt — Amex dropped it on June 30, 2026.
3. Emirates A380 First — the icon (mind the fees). A ~$12,000 first-class fare runs 136,000 Skywards + ~$1,100 in surcharges: (12,000 − 1,100) ÷ 136,000 × 100 = 8.0¢ per mile — spectacular value on paper, but that $1,100 out of pocket is real. Which cards earn the points
Capital One and Citi still feed all three Gulf carriers, so either can book any of them. Amex feeds Emirates and Qatar but dropped Etihad Guest on June 30, 2026 — and Chase ended its Emirates partnership on October 16, 2025, so Chase points no longer reach any of the three.

The Gulf hubs as gateways onward
Don't think of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha only as destinations — they're connecting hubs to the world. The same award that gets you to the Gulf can carry through to India (see how to fly to India), the Maldives, East and South Africa, and much of Asia. Qatar's Qsuite in particular reaches dozens of onward cities, which is why Avios so often wins on total value.
When to book & how to find space
- Start at the source. Price Qsuite on qatarairways.com, Emirates First on emirates.com, Etihad on etihad.com — then book with the transferable-points program that's cheapest (usually Avios for Qatar).
- Compare surcharges before you transfer. Qatar moderate, Etihad high, Emirates highest. A "cheaper miles" award with $1,000 in fees can be the worse deal.
- Wait for the Amex → Qatar bonus. Confirm space first, then move exactly what you need at the ~30% rate.
- First-class space opens late. Emirates and Etihad release premium award seats closer to departure — set alerts and stay flexible ±3 days.
- Book one seat at a time to surface hidden second seats for a family.
FAQ
Which Gulf carrier is the best value on points? Qatar Qsuite via Avios — moderate surcharges, the widest bank support, and ~2.4¢ (or ~3.1¢ per Amex point with a transfer bonus). Emirates and Etihad fly flashier first-class cabins but cost more once surcharges are counted.
Why are Emirates and Etihad "weaker" if the cabins are better? Two reasons: higher fuel surcharges (Emirates can add $1,000+) and less favorable transfer economics than booking Qatar with Avios. The onboard product is superb; the deal is just costlier.
Can I use points for economy to the Gulf? Yes, but Gulf economy fares are often reasonable in cash — save your miles for the business and first cabins, where the paid price is punishing.
Do I need an Emirates or Qatar credit card? No. All three programs are fed by transferable bank points — Capital One and Citi feed all three; Amex feeds Emirates and Qatar (it dropped Etihad in June 2026); Chase dropped Emirates in October 2025 and no longer feeds any of them.
