Every figure in this hub uses one formula:

Beat the program's baseline value (see how we value points) and it's a good redemption.
1) Hawaii on Turkish miles — the famous sweet spot is dead. For years Turkish priced United mainland–Hawaii at 7,500 miles economy / 15,000 lie-flat — the best deal in domestic travel. Two unannounced devaluations (the latest published December 2025) killed it: Hawaii now sits on its own chart at 25,000 miles economy / 40,000 business one-way, and general US domestic partner awards run 15,000/22,500. On a ~$1,100 lie-flat: ($1,100 − $5.60) ÷ 40,000 × 100 = ~2.7¢ per mile — still above Turkish's 1.3¢ baseline, but no longer a steal worth building a strategy around. 2) The Southwest Companion Pass — a "buy one, get one" machine. Earn the pass and your chosen companion flies for $5.60 each way on every Southwest ticket you book — points or cash — for up to two years. 4) American First to Maui on Atmos Rewards points. Alaska Mileage Plan became Atmos Rewards on August 20, 2025 (Alaska and Hawaiian's merged program; miles converted to points 1:1). 35,000 points + ~$6 on a ~$1,200 recliner-First seat: ($1,200 − $6) ÷ 35,000 × 100 = 3.4¢ per point — more than double our 1.45¢ baseline for the program, for a real first-class seat to the islands. How to book
- Book Hawaii early in peak windows. Beach space is abundant, but winter holidays and spring break tighten up; shoulder seasons are wide open.
- Be patient with Turkish. Search United space on United.com, then book through Turkish (often by phone). The Hawaii guide covers the workaround.
- Chase the Companion Pass early in the year. Earning it in January maximizes the "almost two full years" of free companion travel.
- Stay flexible for Mexico. Southwest and JetBlue prices float with cash fares, so shifting a day or two can cut the point cost meaningfully.
- Redeem fixed-value points when fares are high. Southwest and JetBlue points buy a set fraction of the cash fare, so redeem when fares are high to beat the baseline.
Best uses
Why beach trips are the smartest points play. Long-haul suites are thrilling but rare — you might book one a year, if space cooperates. Beach routes are the opposite: low point prices, tons of availability, and you fly them again and again. A family of four to Cancun or Kona is exactly where saving cash matters most, and the point costs here are a fraction of what one long-haul suite runs.
