Dallas to Hawaii on Points: Best Award Routes & Cards

By Krit · Updated · How we research

Award prices are dynamic and change daily. Treat every number here as a dated, typical range and search live before you transfer points.

From DFW, Hawaii is an American Airlines trip. American flies nonstop to Honolulu and Maui year-round, and adds Kona for the winter season. Because those flights are domestic, taxes on an award are just $5.60. What varies is the number of miles, which depends on whether you book with AAdvantage, Atmos Rewards, British Airways Avios or Turkish. Southwest doesn't fly to Hawaii from Dallas Love Field, so if you want Southwest you'll connect on the West Coast.

Quick answer

  • Cheapest economy route: AA nonstop DFW–Honolulu or DFW–Maui on an off-peak AAdvantage date (dynamic pricing), or the same flight with Avios when AA's dynamic price is high.
  • Best premium-cabin value: AA First DFW–Maui with Atmos Rewards points. It was 35,000 one-way when we booked in 2026, plus taxes and a $20 partner fee. The fee is waived for Atmos Summit cardholders.
  • Best program to collect: AAdvantage, for the hub. Atmos is a useful second program for premium seats.
  • Best card: Citi Strata Elite (ThankYou transfers 1:1 to AAdvantage) or the Atmos Rewards Summit if you'll book AA through Atmos.

Nonstop flights from DFW

Route Airline Alliance Book with
DFW–Honolulu (HNL) American oneworld AAdvantage, Atmos, Avios
DFW–Maui (OGG) American oneworld AAdvantage, Atmos, Avios
DFW–Kona (KOA), seasonal American oneworld AAdvantage, Atmos, Avios

American restarted DFW–Kona in the 2025–26 winter after almost four years away, on a Boeing 787-8 through late March. It runs seasonally, so confirm this winter's dates on aa.com. There's no DFW–Lihue nonstop right now. For Kauai, connect in Honolulu or on the West Coast. American also adds frequencies to Maui at peak times.

Best ways to book

American AAdvantage

American prices its own flights dynamically, so there's no fixed chart for Hawaii. Off-peak economy can be reasonable, while spring break and the holidays can cost several times more. Use the aa.com calendar view and look for "Web Special" fares, which are American's lowest dynamic prices. Domestic first on these routes is a recliner, not a lie-flat seat. Feeds: Citi ThankYou 1:1 (Strata Premier or Strata Elite) and Bilt 1:1.

Atmos Rewards (Alaska + Hawaiian)

Atmos Rewards replaced Alaska Mileage Plan in August 2025 and can book American flights. In 2026 we flew AA First DFW–Maui for 35,000 points plus $5.60 tax and a partner booking fee (trip report). The fee rose from $12.50 to $20 per person, per direction on July 1, 2026, and it's waived for Atmos Rewards Summit cardholders. Re-check the price before you commit, because there are reports of an unannounced May 2026 repricing of American awards booked through Atmos. Feeds: the Atmos co-brand cards and Bilt (1:1). Amex stopped transferring to Hawaiian in June 2025.

British Airways Avios

BA prices American's flights by distance, not demand. A DFW–Hawaii nonstop (about 3,700–3,800 miles) falls in a single band, so Avios can beat AAdvantage when AA's dynamic price spikes. American-operated domestic flights have no carrier surcharges. Feeds: Amex, Chase and Capital One 1:1 to BA, and Citi 1:1 to Qatar (then move the Avios to BA).

Turkish Miles&Smiles (United flights)

The famous 7,500/15,000-mile Hawaii award is gone. Turkish moved Hawaii to its own zone in December 2025, at 25,000 miles in economy and 40,000 in business one-way on United, plus $5.60. United doesn't fly DFW–Hawaii nonstop, so you'd connect through Houston, Denver or the West Coast. Turkish can be hard to book and often requires a phone call. Feeds: Capital One, Citi and Bilt, all 1:1.

Sweet spots from Dallas

  1. AA First to Maui with Atmos points. About 35,000 points for a ~$1,200 first-class seat came to roughly 3.4 cents per point on our booking. Most people can't earn Atmos points from bank cards, so it's best for Atmos cardholders and Bilt members.
  2. Avios on peak dates. When AA's dynamic price jumps over the holidays, check ba.com. The distance-based price doesn't rise with demand, so it can undercut AAdvantage by a wide margin.
  3. Off-peak AAdvantage Web Specials. For economy outside school holidays, AA's own dynamic price is often the cheapest and simplest booking. You get a nonstop, no partner fee and only $5.60 in tax.

Bilt is the only major transferable currency that reaches both AAdvantage and Atmos. See the Bilt guide.

Taxes & surcharges

  • Every program: Hawaii is domestic, so the government tax is $5.60 one-way on all of these awards.
  • Atmos partner fee: $20 per person, per direction on American flights (since July 1, 2026), waived for Summit cardholders.
  • Turkish: $5.60, but expect a slower booking process.
  • No carrier surcharges apply on American-operated domestic awards, whichever program you use.

FAQ

Which Hawaiian islands can I fly to nonstop from Dallas? Oahu (Honolulu) and Maui (Kahului) year-round on American, plus the Big Island (Kona) seasonally in winter. Kauai requires a connection.

How many miles is Dallas to Hawaii on American? It varies. AAdvantage prices American's flights dynamically, so check the calendar for Web Specials. Atmos priced AA First DFW–Maui at 35,000 points in 2026.

Is Turkish still the best way to fly to Hawaii? No. Since December 2025, Turkish charges 25,000 miles in economy and 40,000 in business on United, and there's no United nonstop from DFW. It's still useful for some trips, but it's no longer the best deal.

Is first class to Hawaii lie-flat? Usually not. American's first class from DFW to the islands is a wide domestic recliner. It's comfortable for an 8-hour flight, but it isn't an international business-class seat.

Can I use Southwest points from Dallas? Only with a connection. Southwest's Hawaii flights leave from the West Coast and other western cities, not Love Field.
