Best Credit Cards & Lounge Access at Hong Kong International (HKG)

By Krit · Updated · How we research

Lounge access rules change often — confirm in the lounge's app or the card's benefits page before you fly.

Hong Kong is Cathay Pacific's home and a major Asia hub for United flyers. For US cardholders, HKG lounge access now comes down to the Amex Centurion Lounge, five Plaza Premium rooms and Priority Pass. The Chase Sapphire Lounge here closed on January 5, 2026, so ignore older guides that still recommend it.

Airport snapshot

Almost everything happens in Terminal 1. Cathay Pacific dominates, and the airside zone runs from the East Hall (gates 1–23) through the West Hall and Pier (gates 35–65), with the Midfield Concourse (gates 201–230) reached by train. All card lounges are in Terminal 1. Terminal 2 reopened for departures in May 2026, but no lounges are listed there yet.

Recommended strategy

  • If you want one card that covers the best lounges: Amex Platinum. The Centurion and gate 60 Plaza Premium sit side by side, and you can switch if one is full.
  • If you fly United often from HKG: United Club membership or the United Club card; the club is in the same gate 60 cluster.
  • If you fly Cathay or American: Earn oneworld Sapphire; the Cathay lounges beat every card lounge here.
  • If you want strong lounges at a lower cost: Venture X, and use the 24-hour Plaza Premium rooms. Budget $35 per Priority Pass guest.
  • If you held Sapphire Reserve for the HKG Sapphire Lounge: That reason is gone. Priority Pass still works, but the Platinum is the stronger card here.

No card? Day passes & other options

Plaza Premium sells walk-in and prebooked passes at all three main rooms and the Plaza Premium First rooms, and the gate 23 Kyra sells paid entry online. A 2025 guide put Plaza Premium walk-in prices from HK$640 (about US$82) for two hours.
