Best Credit Cards & Lounge Access at Vancouver International (YVR)

By Krit · How we research

Lounge access rules change often — confirm in the lounge's app or the card's benefits page before you fly.

Vancouver is Air Canada's Pacific gateway and a common start or end point for Alaska cruises and Asia trips. YVR lounge access for US cardholders is refreshingly simple: Plaza Premium runs a lounge in every zone, including the US-bound transborder area, and Amex Platinum, Sapphire Reserve and Venture X all get you in. There's no Centurion Lounge at YVR and no US airline club.

Quick answer

  • Best overall for YVR lounge access: Amex Platinum — Plaza Premium in all three zones without Priority Pass enrollment, plus Priority Pass for the SkyTeam Lounge (no Centurion Lounge at YVR)
  • Best for couples on Priority Pass: Chase Sapphire Reserve — Priority Pass YVR lounges with two free guests
  • Best value for Priority Pass: Capital One Venture X — the same Plaza Premium rooms through Priority Pass for $395
  • Best for frequent Air Canada and United flyers: Star Alliance Gold or a business-class ticket for Air Canada's Maple Leaf Lounges

Airport snapshot

YVR has three separate airside zones: Domestic (Canada), International (non-US) and US Transborder, where you clear US preclearance before departure. Flights to the US on Alaska, Delta, United, American and Air Canada all leave from the transborder zone, which has one Plaza Premium lounge and one Maple Leaf Lounge.

Where to go by terminal

Zone Airlines Lounges there
Domestic (Piers B, C) Air Canada, WestJet, other Canadian flights Plaza Premium near B15 and C29, Maple Leaf
International (Pier D) Air Canada, Asian, European and SkyTeam carriers Plaza Premium near D67, Plaza Premium First, Maple Leaf, SkyTeam Lounge, Cathay
US Transborder (Pier E) All flights to the US Plaza Premium near E87, Maple Leaf near E85

The three zones are physically separated, so you can only use the lounges in the zone you depart from. For US flights, clear preclearance first; the lounges are on the other side.

Lounges at YVR

Plaza Premium Lounges (all zones)

  • Location: Domestic near gate B15 (with showers) and near C29; International near D67; Transborder near E87, after US preclearance.
  • Access: Amex Platinum and Business Platinum directly (no Priority Pass enrollment needed; a stay limit of about three hours applies). All four are also in Priority Pass, so Sapphire Reserve, Venture X and Citi Strata Elite holders get in. Pay-at-the-door entry is sold, space permitting.
  • Guest policy: Amex Platinum: up to two guests free at Plaza Premium. Priority Pass guests follow your card's rule.
  • Best for: Everyone; it's the only card lounge in the transborder zone.

Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges

  • Location: Domestic near C29, International near the Pier D entrance (with the invite-only Signature Suite above it) and Transborder near E85.
  • Access: Star Alliance Gold members and Air Canada or Star Alliance business-class passengers, Aeroplan 50K and above and Maple Leaf Club members. That includes United Premier Gold and above flying Star. Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders (and Sapphire Reserve for Business primary cardholders) also get in with a same-day Star Alliance boarding pass. No public day passes.
  • Guest policy: Per Air Canada and Star Alliance rules; Sapphire Reserve cardholders get one free guest, then C$59 each.
  • Best for: United and Air Canada flyers with status, and Sapphire Reserve holders flying Star Alliance.

SkyTeam Lounge and Cathay Pacific (International zone)

  • Location: SkyTeam Lounge in Concourse D west near D53; Cathay Pacific above D67.
  • Access: SkyTeam Lounge: SkyTeam first and business passengers and Elite Plus members, plus Priority Pass. Cathay: Cathay and oneworld premium passengers and Sapphire and Emerald members.
  • Guest policy: Per alliance or Priority Pass rules.
  • Best for: International departures; note that neither serves US-bound flights.

Priority Pass at YVR

  • Domestic: Plaza Premium near B15 and near C29.
  • International: Plaza Premium near D67 and the SkyTeam Lounge near D53.
  • Transborder: Plaza Premium near E87.
  • Access: Amex Platinum, Sapphire Reserve, Venture X and Citi Strata Elite include Priority Pass after enrollment; all five are real lounges. The Plaza Premium First room in the international zone is pay-in only. Venture X lost its direct Plaza Premium benefit on March 1, 2025, but reaches the same rooms through Priority Pass.

Recommended strategy

  • If you fly to the US from YVR: Any of these cards covers the transborder Plaza Premium; it can get busy, so arrive with time for preclearance plus a lounge stop.
  • If you fly Air Canada or United often: Star Alliance Gold, or a Chase Sapphire Reserve with a Star Alliance boarding pass, opens the Maple Leaf Lounges in every zone; Priority Pass adds Plaza Premium as a backup.
  • If you want one card that covers the best lounges: At YVR the cards are near equal; the Platinum's direct Plaza Premium access and Centurion lounges elsewhere make it the overall pick.
  • If you want strong lounges at a lower cost: Venture X for $395; budget $35 per Priority Pass guest.
  • If you fly Delta abroad: The SkyTeam Lounge serves international departures; for US flights you'll be at Plaza Premium in Pier E.

No card? Day passes & other options

Plaza Premium sells walk-in entry in all zones (around $68, per a June 2026 directory; prebooking may add a small admin fee), and the Plaza Premium First room costs more. Air Canada doesn't sell Maple Leaf day passes.

FAQ

Is there a Centurion Lounge at Vancouver? No. Amex Platinum cardholders use the Plaza Premium Lounges in all three zones and Priority Pass. The closest Centurion Lounge is in Seattle.

Is there a lounge after US preclearance at YVR? Yes. The transborder zone has a Plaza Premium Lounge near gate E87, open to Priority Pass and Amex Platinum, and an Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge near E85 for Star Alliance elites, business-class passengers and Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders on a Star Alliance flight.

Amex Platinum vs Sapphire Reserve vs Venture X at YVR? All three get you into the same Plaza Premium Lounges. The Platinum gets in directly with two free guests, the Sapphire Reserve uses Priority Pass with two free guests, and Venture X uses Priority Pass with $35 guests. If YVR is your main airport, Venture X's lower fee is hard to beat for solo travel.

Can I use a domestic lounge before a flight to the US? No. The zones are separate, so once you clear preclearance you can only use the transborder lounges.
