San Francisco has one nonstop to India — Air India to Delhi — plus a rich set of one-stop options: Emirates via Dubai, Qatar via Doha and Turkish via Istanbul all fly from SFO, as do Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong, Singapore Airlines via Singapore, and United, Lufthansa and others via Europe. For the Bay Area's large Indian community, that means a choice between going west over the Pacific or east over Europe and the Gulf, and the best points play depends on which way you go.

Best ways to book
Air Canada Aeroplan (Air India nonstop)
Aeroplan counts India in its Atlantic zone. SFO–Delhi is roughly 7,700 miles, in the 6,001–8,000-mile band: 90,000 points in business and 60,000 in economy one-way on Air India after the 1 June 2026 update. No fuel surcharges, and a one-way award can include a stopover for 5,000 points. Aeroplan can also route you via Europe or Asia on other Star Alliance carriers. Feeds: Chase, Amex, Capital One and Bilt at 1:1.
Qatar Airways Privilege Club (Avios)
Qatar priced US–Indian subcontinent Qsuite at 80,000 Avios one-way off-peak in 2026, down from 96,000; peak dates cost more. Doha connects to many Indian cities the nonstop doesn't serve, including Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi and Ahmedabad. Taxes ran about $280 each way on our DFW–Hyderabad booking. Feeds: Amex, Capital One, Citi and Bilt at 1:1; Chase goes 1:1 to British Airways, then Avios combine into Qatar.
American AAdvantage (Qatar, Cathay)
AAdvantage's partner rate for the Indian subcontinent is about 70,000 miles one-way in business per third-party charts — that's the price to look for on Qatar via Doha. Feeds: Citi ThankYou at 1:1.
United MileagePlus
United sells Air India's nonstop without fuel surcharges and has its own one-stops via Newark or Europe. Pricing varies; compare it with Aeroplan's 90,000. Cardholders get a 10–15% award discount. Feeds: Chase and Bilt at 1:1.
Cathay, Singapore and Emirates (Pacific and Gulf one-stops)
- Cathay Asia Miles: Capital One, Citi and Bilt at 1:1; Amex at 1:0.8. Atmos and AAdvantage also book Cathay.
- Singapore KrisFlyer: Chase, Amex, Capital One and Citi at 1:1. Singapore's own seats are easiest to find in KrisFlyer.
- Emirates Skywards: Bilt at 1:1, Amex and Citi at 1:0.8, Capital One at 1:0.75. Expect high carrier fees in business. See our Emirates Skywards guide.
Turkish Miles&Smiles
Turkish flies SFO–Istanbul and on to several Indian cities. It prices segments separately and its partner booking is finicky, so it works best on Turkish's own flights. Feeds: Capital One, Citi and Bilt at 1:1.
Sweet spots from San Francisco
- Qsuite to India for 80,000 Avios. The best business seat to India on points, and Doha reaches more Indian cities than any nonstop.
- Air India nonstop on Aeroplan. 90,000 in business or 60,000 in economy with no fuel surcharges and no connection.
- AAdvantage on Qatar. About 70,000 in business for Citi points holders.

Taxes & surcharges
Star Alliance awards booked through Aeroplan, United or LifeMiles carry no fuel surcharges, so Air India's nonstop costs little beyond government taxes. Qatar adds moderate carrier fees; Emirates adds the most in business. Departing India costs more than arriving because of local departure taxes, so price the return leg carefully.

Should I go west over the Pacific or east via the Gulf? The Gulf one-stops (Qatar, Emirates) and Air India's nonstop are usually shorter in total travel time to North India. Going west via Hong Kong or Singapore can work better for South India.
