New York to India on Points: Best Award Routes & Cards

By Krit · Updated · How we research

Award prices, routes and transfer ratios change often — search the live price before you move any points.

New York has the most nonstop flights to India of any US city: Air India flies to Delhi and Mumbai from both JFK and Newark, United flies Newark–Delhi, and American flies JFK–Delhi. Add the one-stop options through Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul and Europe, and you have more ways to use points to India from New York than from anywhere else in the country.

Quick answer

  • Cheapest economy route: Aeroplan on Air India's nonstops — 60,000 points one-way on the partner chart — or a dynamic United or American saver when one shows up.
  • Best business-class value: Qatar Airways Qsuite via Doha with Avios — 80,000 off-peak one-way since Qatar's 2026 cut for the US–Indian subcontinent.
  • Best program to collect: Qatar Privilege Club (Avios) — Amex, Capital One, Citi and Bilt transfer 1:1, and Chase reaches it through British Airways.
  • Best card: Amex Platinum or Gold, or Capital One Venture X — both feed Qatar directly and Aeroplan too.

Good one-stops: Qatar via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Etihad via Abu Dhabi, Turkish via Istanbul, and the European carriers (Lufthansa, Swiss, BA, Virgin Atlantic, Air France, KLM) via their hubs. These reach Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kochi and other cities the nonstops don't. Air India's North America flights have at times been rerouted around closed airspace since 2025, so check the routing and flight time when you book.

Best ways to book

Air Canada Aeroplan

Aeroplan puts India in its Atlantic zone. New York–Delhi is roughly 7,300 miles, which lands in the 6,001–8,000-mile band: 90,000 points one-way in business and 60,000 in economy on partners like Air India after the 1 June 2026 chart update. No fuel surcharges on Air India. United's own flights in Aeroplan are priced dynamically. Feeds: Chase, Amex, Capital One and Bilt at 1:1.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club (Avios)

Qatar cut its US–Indian subcontinent Qsuite price to 80,000 Avios one-way off-peak in 2026 (it had been 96,000); peak dates cost more. Taxes run around $280 each way on our DFW–Hyderabad booking. Doha also connects to more Indian cities than any nonstop. Feeds: Amex, Capital One, Citi and Bilt at 1:1; Chase moves to British Airways 1:1, and you can then combine Avios into Qatar.

United MileagePlus

United prices its own Newark–Delhi flight dynamically, and saver business space is scarce. It also sells Air India seats with no fuel surcharges — compare that price with Aeroplan's 90,000 before you transfer. Cardholders get a 10–15% award discount. Feeds: Chase and Bilt at 1:1.

American AAdvantage

American's JFK–Delhi flight is dynamically priced. On partners, AAdvantage's rate for the Indian subcontinent is about 70,000 miles one-way in business per third-party charts, which is the price to look for on Qatar via Doha. Feeds: Citi ThankYou at 1:1.

Emirates Skywards and Etihad Guest

Both offer one-stops via the Gulf and both add sizable carrier fees in business. Emirates takes Bilt at 1:1, Amex and Citi at 1:0.8 and Capital One at 1:0.75. Amex stopped transferring to Etihad on 29 June 2026; Capital One, Citi and Bilt still send points there at 1:1. See our Emirates Skywards guide.

Avianca LifeMiles

LifeMiles books Air India and other Star Alliance carriers without fuel surcharges, and runs frequent miles sales. Check its price against Aeroplan; the two often differ by thousands of miles on the same seat. Feeds: Amex, Capital One, Citi and Bilt at 1:1.

Sweet spots from New York

  • Qsuite to India for 80,000 Avios. The best business seat to India on points, at a price below most nonstop options. Watch for transfer bonuses to Avios — Amex ran 30% to British Airways/Iberia/Aer Lingus Avios (which can then move to Qatar) through 27 September 2026.
  • Aeroplan on Air India nonstops. 90,000 in business or 60,000 in economy, with low taxes and no connection. Aeroplan also allows a stopover on one-way awards for 5,000 points.
  • AAdvantage on Qatar. About 70,000 miles in business if you hold Citi points.

Taxes & surcharges

Star Alliance awards through Aeroplan, United or LifeMiles carry no fuel surcharges, so you mostly pay government taxes. Qatar adds moderate carrier fees (about $280 each way in Qsuite on our recent booking). Emirates adds the most in business. Flights leaving India carry higher departure taxes than flights to India, so a one-way home often costs more in cash than the outbound.
