The American Express® Business Gold Card is the business card for owners whose spending moves around. Instead of asking you to memorize categories, it watches where your business spends the most each billing cycle and automatically pays 4x Membership Rewards on your top two — from a list of six that covers advertising, technology, gas, restaurants, transit and wireless. At $375 the fee is steep, but a stack of monthly credits can claw most of it back, and the points are full-strength, transferable Membership Rewards from day one — no pairing tricks required.

What the points are worth
We value Membership Rewards at 2.0¢ each because they transfer 1:1 (or better) to Air Canada Aeroplan, ANA, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Avianca, British Airways/Iberia/Qatar Avios, Virgin Atlantic, Singapore KrisFlyer and more, plus Hilton at 1:2. Unlike the no-fee cash-back cards we cover, the Business Gold needs no premium sibling to unlock that — its points are transferable on their own. That makes its 4x categories an effective 8% back in travel value at our valuation.

Earning rates
| Rate | Category |
|---|---|
| 4x | Your top two categories each billing cycle, chosen automatically from the six below (first $150,000/calendar year combined, then 1x) |
| 3x | Flights and prepaid hotels booked through amextravel.com |
| 1x | Everything else |
The six eligible 4x categories (all U.S. purchases): advertising in select media (online, TV, radio) · electronic goods retailers and software/cloud providers · gas stations · restaurants (incl. takeout & delivery) · transit (rideshare, trains, tolls, parking and more) · monthly wireless telephone service.
The adaptive part is genuinely useful: an ad-heavy month earns 4x on ads, a road-trip month earns 4x on gas, and you never have to pick in advance. The trap is the flat 1x on everything outside the six — general inventory, insurance, contractors and the like earn poorly here.
Benefits & credits
Credit amounts and perks change — verify each is current before you count on it, and note most require enrollment.
- Up to $240/year (as $20/month) back at FedEx, Grubhub and U.S. office supply stores. Monthly use-it-or-lose-it; Amex currently lists the FedEx leg through October 1, 2026 — check the live terms.
- Up to $155/year (as $12.95/month) toward a Walmart+ membership.
- Up to $300/year in ChatGPT Business credits and up to $150/year toward Squarespace — 2026 additions aimed squarely at small-business software spend.
- Purchase protection (up to $10,000 per occurrence) and extended warranty.
- Trip delay reimbursement on eligible round trips booked with the card.
- No foreign transaction fees.
- Employee cards with spending controls; all points pool to one account.
On paper the credits exceed the $375 fee. In practice they arrive in monthly slices tied to specific merchants — count only the ones your business would spend on anyway.
Best uses (sweet spots), with examples
Every example uses the same formula: (cash price − taxes) ÷ points × 100 = cents per point (CPP).
1. Ad spend at 4x, then off to a Star Alliance partner. $5,000/month of Google or Meta ads = 20,000 MR/month. Transfer 60,000 to Air Canada Aeroplan for a ~$4,200 business seat to Europe + ~$200 taxes: (4,200 − 200) ÷ 60,000 × 100 = 6.67¢ per point.
2. ANA business class to Japan — the classic MR play. Membership Rewards is the easiest way into ANA's round-trip business awards, one of the best-value uses of any transferable currency.
3. Restaurants and gas at 4x on autopilot. A food-truck or delivery-heavy business earning 4x on both fuel and food is pulling an effective 8% back in travel value on its two biggest lines.
4. Hilton at 1:2 for a points top-up. 10,000 MR → 20,000 Hilton Honors points when you're short for a redemption like the Conrad Maldives — situational, but a real ratio advantage.
Fine print worth knowing
- Amex welcome offers are personalized. The "as high as" number is a ceiling, not a promise — log in or use the application link to see your offer, and don't apply assuming the maximum.
- Once-per-lifetime bonus per Amex product; the application pop-up warns you if you're ineligible before the credit pull.
- The $150,000 4x cap is combined across categories per calendar year, then 1x.
- 4x applies to your top two categories per billing cycle, determined automatically — you can't lock choices in.
- Most credits require enrollment and pay out monthly — set reminders or they quietly evaporate.
- It's a charge-style business card: sole proprietors can apply with their own name and SSN.
Who should get it
Get the Business Gold if your business concentrates $2,000+/month in the six categories — especially advertising, software/tech, gas or restaurants — and you'll actually use two or three of the credits. The adaptive 4x beats any fixed-category business card for spend that shifts month to month.
Consider the Ink Business Preferred instead if your bonus spend is mostly ads and travel — it earns 3x for a $95 fee. Step up to the Amex Business Platinum if lounges and premium travel perks matter more than category earning, and add the no-fee Blue Business Plus either way to catch non-category spend at 2x. (The personal Amex Gold is the household-spend equivalent — 4x on U.S. supermarkets and restaurants.)
Not sure where it fits your setup? Run your cards through Points Path and track every balance in your Rewards Wallet.
Bottom line
The Business Gold is the best adaptive earner in the business-card market: 4x that follows your two biggest categories automatically, real transferable points behind it, and enough credits to offset most of the $375 fee for a business that uses them. Be honest about the 1x outside the six categories and about whether monthly merchant credits fit how you actually spend — then let it turn your largest expense lines into business-class flights.
