The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express is the quiet workhorse of any Membership Rewards setup. It has no annual fee, earns 2x MR on everything (up to a generous annual cap), and — because it's an MR-earning card — it keeps your entire Membership Rewards balance alive with zero ongoing cost. If you carry an Amex Gold or Platinum, this is the card that catches every dollar those cards only reward at 1x.

What the points are worth
We value Membership Rewards at 2.0¢ each because they transfer 1:1 (or better) to Air Canada Aeroplan, ANA, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Avianca, British Airways/Iberia/Qatar (Avios), Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Singapore KrisFlyer, Marriott, and Hilton (1:2). This card earns the same currency as the premium Amex cards — so its 2x, when transferred to a partner, is worth an effective ~4% back in travel value on everything, with no category to track.
A 15,000-point bonus is therefore worth:
- $150 cashed out (don't) ·
- ~$150 toward paid travel via Amex Travel ·
- $300+ transferred to a partner for a well-chosen award.
Where your points can go
The Blue Business Plus earns Amex Membership Rewards, which transfer to these airline and hotel programs — tap any partner to see how to use those miles, what they're worth, and the best redemptions:
Airline transfer partners Air Canada Aeroplan · ANA Mileage Club · Air France/KLM Flying Blue · Avianca LifeMiles · British Airways / Qatar Avios · Delta SkyMiles · Virgin Atlantic · Singapore KrisFlyer · Cathay Pacific Asia Miles · Qantas Frequent Flyer · Emirates Skywards · JetBlue TrueBlue
Hotel transfer partners Hilton Honors · Marriott Bonvoy · Choice Privileges
Amex charges a small excise-tax fee to move points to U.S. airline programs (Delta, JetBlue) — see the fine print below. For every transfer ratio, transfer time and current bonus, see the complete transfer partners chart.
Earning rates
| Rate | Category |
|---|---|
| 2x | Everything (up to $50,000 in purchases/yr) |
| 1x | Everything after the $50,000 cap resets each year |
That's the whole card: flat 2x MR on all spend up to $50K/year, then 1x. No rotating categories, no activation, no quarterly math. The simplicity is the point.
Benefits & credits
This is a no-fee card, so don't expect lounges or a credit stack:
- Intro 0% APR on purchases for an introductory period, then a variable APR (verify current terms).
- Employee cards at no cost, with spending controls.
- Expanded Buying Power — the ability to spend above your limit when you can pay it off (adjusts to your usage; not a fixed limit).
- Basic purchase protection / extended warranty (verify current coverage).
- Note: it charges a foreign transaction fee (~2.7%) — keep a no-FTF card for travel abroad.
The real "benefit" is structural: it's a free lifeline for your Membership Rewards. Downgrade a Platinum or Gold to save the fee and, as long as this card stays open, your points don't get forfeited.
Best uses (sweet spots), with examples
1. Catch every non-bonus dollar at 2x. Your Gold earns 1x on that dentist bill, insurance payment, or contractor invoice; the Blue Business Plus earns 2x. Route all "uncategorized" spend here and it quietly compounds into award flights.
2. Fund a business-class seat from ordinary spend. Put $30,000 of miscellaneous annual spend on it at 2x → 60,000 MR. Transfer to Aeroplan for a ~$4,200 Star Alliance business fare + ~$200 taxes: CPP = (4,200 − 200) ÷ 60,000 × 100 = 6.67¢ per point.
3. Short-haul Avios from everyday spend. Move points to British Airways/Iberia Avios for a cheap nonstop — a ~$180 fare for 11,000 Avios + ~$12 taxes: CPP = (180 − 12) ÷ 11,000 × 100 = 1.53¢, with wide availability.
4. Keep a big MR balance alive for $0. No annual fee means you can hold this indefinitely as the anchor that protects points earned on cards you later cancel.
Fine print worth knowing
- The 2x rate caps at $50,000/yr in purchases, then drops to 1x — high spenders should split overflow to another card.
- It's a business card — a sole proprietorship (your name/SSN) commonly qualifies; typically won't show on personal credit reports.
- Charges a foreign transaction fee (~2.7%) — the one place not to use it.
- Once-per-lifetime bonus per Amex card product; the pre-application pop-up may flag ineligibility.
- US-airline transfer fee: 60¢ per 1,000 points to U.S. airline programs (cap ~$99).
Who should get it
Get the Blue Business Plus if you already earn Membership Rewards (or plan to) and want a no-fee card that earns 2x on everything and keeps your MR balance safe forever. It's the single best no-annual-fee MR earner and the ideal third card in an Amex setup.
Pair it with an Amex Gold for 4x dining/groceries and an Amex Platinum for lounges and credits — the Gold and Platinum do the category earning and perks, the Blue Business Plus mops up everything else at 2x. If you want a no-fee personal card with transferable points instead, look at a Chase pairing via the Chase Sapphire Preferred.
Bottom line
The Blue Business Plus is the glue of a Membership Rewards strategy: free to keep, 2x on all spend up to $50K/year, and a permanent home for points earned on cards you may not keep forever. It earns no headlines and needs no management — it just quietly turns your leftover spend into transferable points worth ~4% in travel. Every serious Amex user should have one.
