Chicago to India on Points: Best Award Routes & Cards

By Krit · Updated · How we research

Award prices are dynamic and change daily. Treat every number here as a dated, typical range and search live before you transfer points.

Chicago is one of the few US cities with a nonstop to India. Air India flies O'Hare–Delhi, and because Air India is in Star Alliance, you can book it with Aeroplan, United and other Star programs. ORD also has nonstops to all three Gulf hubs (Qatar to Doha, Emirates to Dubai, Etihad to Abu Dhabi), plus Turkish and Royal Jordanian, and Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, British Airways, Air France and KLM via Europe. You'll choose between flying nonstop on Air India and getting better business class through the Gulf, usually Qatar Qsuite.

Quick answer

  • Cheapest economy route: Air India's ORD–Delhi nonstop, or a one-stop on a Gulf carrier. Compare against cash, which is often competitive in economy.
  • Best business-class value: Qatar Qsuite ORD–Doha–India for 80,000 Avios one-way off-peak (up to about 96,000 peak) plus about $280 in taxes.
  • Best program to collect: Avios for Qatar, plus Aeroplan for the Air India nonstop with no carrier surcharges.
  • Best card: Capital One Venture X transfers 1:1 to Qatar, Etihad, Turkish and Aeroplan. Chase Sapphire Reserve covers United, Aeroplan and Avios through BA.

Best ways to book

Air Canada Aeroplan (Air India nonstop)

Aeroplan adds no fuel surcharges and can book Air India's Delhi nonstop, along with Lufthansa, Swiss and Turkish one-stops. Our India hub puts business at roughly 90,000–110,000 points one-way, so check the current chart. Award space on Air India's own flights can be limited. Feeds: Amex, Chase, Capital One and Bilt, all 1:1.

United MileagePlus

United doesn't fly to India from Chicago, but it can book Air India and the Star Alliance connections through Europe. Pricing is dynamic, with no fuel surcharges. Compare with Aeroplan for the same flight, because United's partner prices are often higher. Feeds: Chase 1:1 and Bilt 1:1.

Qatar Privilege Club (Avios)

Qsuite flies the long ORD–Doha leg, and the shorter Doha–India flight is standard business. Qatar cut its US–Indian Subcontinent business rate to 80,000 Avios off-peak in 2026, down from 96,000, with about $280 in taxes (our DFW–Hyderabad booking). Feeds: Amex 1:1 and Capital One 1:1, Citi 1:1 to Qatar, and Chase 1:1 to BA (then move the Avios to Qatar). Wait for a transfer bonus before you move points.

American AAdvantage

AAdvantage books Qatar from ORD for 70,000 miles one-way in business to the Indian Subcontinent (Frequent Miler, June 2026), a good option if you earn AA miles at O'Hare. Feeds: Citi ThankYou 1:1 and Bilt 1:1.

Etihad Guest

Etihad flies ORD–Abu Dhabi and connects to many Indian cities. Capital One and Citi transfer to Etihad Guest 1:1. Amex stopped transferring to Etihad on June 29, 2026, so Amex points no longer reach it. Check both the miles and the carrier surcharges before you transfer.

Emirates Skywards and Turkish Miles&Smiles

Emirates flies ORD–Dubai, but carrier surcharges are high and the transfer ratios are poor (Amex and Citi 1:0.8, Capital One 1:0.75). Turkish ORD–Istanbul is a Star Alliance alternative you can book with Aeroplan, or with Miles&Smiles through Capital One, Citi or Bilt.

Sweet spots from Chicago

  1. Qsuite with a transfer bonus. About 80,000 Avios one-way. With a 30% Amex bonus (one ran through September 27, 2026), that's about 61,500 Membership Rewards points.
  2. Air India nonstop on Aeroplan. You avoid a connection and pay no carrier surcharges. This is the best option if a nonstop matters more than the business-class seat.
  3. Qatar on AAdvantage for 70,000. The same Qatar flight for 10,000 fewer miles than Qatar's own peak price.
  4. Etihad via Abu Dhabi with Capital One or Citi. A useful backup in December, when Qatar award space is gone.
