Best Credit Cards & Lounge Access for Kona (KOA) Flyers

By Krit · Updated · How we research

Lounge access rules change often — confirm in the lounge's app or the card's benefits page before you fly.

Kona is the Big Island's main airport, with Alaska, Hawaiian, United, Delta, Southwest and American flying to the mainland and Hawaiian connecting interisland. KOA lounge access is close to nonexistent for cardholders: the only lounge is Hawaiian's Premier Club, and Priority Pass KOA doesn't exist. There's no Centurion Lounge at KOA, so the best credit card for Kona flyers is really the one that covers your connection or your next airport.

Quick answer

  • Best overall for KOA lounge access: no credit card gets you into a lounge at KOA. The Premier Club admits Hawaiian first-class passengers and eligible Atmos Rewards elites, not card or Priority Pass holders.
  • Best value for Priority Pass on a Big Island trip: Capital One Venture X — useless at KOA, but it covers Hawaiian's Premier Clubs at Honolulu and Maui if you connect or island-hop
  • Best for families island-hopping: Chase Sapphire Reserve — two free Priority Pass guests at HNL and OGG
  • Best for frequent Hawaiian flyers: earn Atmos Rewards elite status; it's the only repeatable way into the KOA Premier Club

Airport snapshot

KOA is an open-air terminal: gate areas have roofs but no walls, with ceiling fans instead of air conditioning. Domestic gates run 1–12, and a smaller international wing starts at gate 13. Hawaiian's Premier Club is the only lounge, and United, Delta, American and Alaska have no clubs here.

Where to go by terminal

  • Domestic gates (1–12): Hawaiian Premier Club, reported near gate 10. Hawaiian first class and eligible Atmos elites only.
  • International wing (gate 13 and up): no lounge.
  • Getting around: the two areas are joined by an open-air walkway with a security checkpoint, so don't plan to wander between them.

Lounges at KOA

There's no Centurion Lounge at KOA and no Priority Pass lounge.

Hawaiian Airlines Premier Club KOA

  • Location: Domestic gate area after security, reported near gate 10.
  • Access: Hawaiian first-class passengers, eligible Atmos Rewards elites on Hawaiian or Alaska flights, and remaining Premier Club members (Hawaiian stopped selling and renewing memberships in January 2025). Not Priority Pass, Amex Platinum or any other card.
  • Guest policy: Set by your access route; confirm with Hawaiian before you bring anyone.
  • Best for: Hawaiian first-class passengers. Reviews of Hawaiian's neighbor-island clubs at Maui and Lihue describe small rooms with drinks and light snacks, not meals.

Priority Pass at KOA

  • None. KOA isn't in Priority Pass's current US airport list, and there are no Priority Pass restaurants. Some directories still show the Premier Club as Priority Pass; recent sources and Priority Pass itself don't.
  • Access: Priority Pass from Platinum, Sapphire Reserve, Venture X or Strata Elite works at Hawaiian's Premier Clubs in Honolulu and Maui, not Kona.

Recommended strategy

  • If you fly nonstop from KOA to the mainland: No card helps at Kona. Pick a card for your home airport instead.
  • If you connect through Honolulu: Any Priority Pass card gets you into Hawaiian's Premier Club at HNL. See our HNL lounge guide.
  • If you want one card that covers the best lounges: Amex Platinum is the broadest overall, but in Hawaii its lounge value is the same Priority Pass you'd get from Venture X for $395.
  • If you fly Hawaiian a lot: Elite status, not a credit card, is what opens the KOA Premier Club.

Can I buy a day pass for the KOA lounge? Don't count on it. Hawaiian doesn't advertise day passes for the KOA Premier Club, and it stopped selling new memberships in January 2025.

Amex Platinum vs Sapphire Reserve vs Venture X: which is best at KOA? None of them gets you into a lounge at KOA. For a Hawaii trip that connects through Honolulu or Maui, Venture X is the cheapest Priority Pass card and Sapphire Reserve is best for families.
