The Choice Privileges® Select Mastercard® (Wells Fargo, $95) is the premium card for a programme most Americans underrate. Domestically, Choice means Comfort Inn and Quality Inn off the highway; in Europe and Japan, the same points book well-located city hotels — often with breakfast, sometimes dinner, included — at prices that embarrass bigger programmes. Add a 30,000-point anniversary bonus worth roughly double the fee, and this card suits value-focused travelers heading abroad as much as Choice regulars at home. What the points are worth
We value Choice points at 0.6¢ each — a deliberately conservative baseline, because domestic redemptions are unremarkable. Standard award nights start around 6,000–8,000 points, most fall in the 12,000–30,000 range, and premium properties can exceed 50,000.
CPP formula: (cash − taxes) ÷ points × 100 = ¢ per point.
The programme beats its baseline abroad. A 16,000-point night in Oslo or Stockholm at a hotel charging €150+ (~$165) is (165 − 0) ÷ 16,000 × 100 = 1.03¢ — over 1.7x our valuation — and at Clarion Collection properties that includes free breakfast and a light evening buffet, easily $50+/day of food in Scandinavia. Comfort hotels in Tokyo and Osaka at 8,000–16,000 points against $200+ cash rates land between 1.25¢ and 2.5¢.
Where your points can go
Choice spans 7,000+ hotels across 45+ countries — Comfort, Quality, Sleep, Clarion, Cambria, Ascend Collection, plus the Radisson brands in the Americas. Two less obvious doors:
- Europe & Japan, as above — the programme's genuine sweet spot.
- Preferred Hotels & Resorts partnership — upscale independent hotels bookable with Choice points at roughly 25,000–55,000/night (availability via Choice's dedicated portal).

At 0.6¢/point, 5x is an effective 3% back in Choice value on four everyday categories — a $600/month gas-and-groceries habit earns ~36,000 points a year, two-plus European award nights.
Benefits & credits

Best uses (sweet spots), with examples
1. Scandinavia, eyes open. Norway and Sweden city-center hotels — Clarion, Comfort, Quality — cluster at 16,000 points where cash rates run €130–200+, and Clarion Collection's included breakfast + evening meal stretches the value further. (Know the history: many of these were 8,000–12,000 points before a January 2024 devaluation — older blog posts overstate the deal, but it's still the best thing in the programme.)
2. Japan on a budget. Central Comfort hotels in Tokyo and Osaka at 8,000–16,000 points, breakfast included, against $200+ cash rates — among the cheapest points-per-real-hotel-night anywhere in Japan.
3. The anniversary points as the whole justification. 30,000 points ≈ $180 of value against a $95 fee. Even a cardholder who never optimizes is up ~$85 a year plus Platinum status.
4. The 1:2 Citi feed. Because ThankYou points transfer at 1:2, a Citi Strata Premier effectively books those Oslo nights at 8,000 TY each — one of the highest-leverage hotel transfers in the game. Top up from the bank side only when you've found the stay.
Fine print worth knowing
- Award bookings open ~50 weeks out (expanded in early 2025 from the old 100-day window — a former major annoyance, now largely fixed).
- Points expire after 18 months of inactivity for non-elites — but as a cardholder you hold Platinum, so yours don't expire while the card is open.
- Choice announced a programme overhaul for 2026–2027 (a new top Titanium tier, status "soft landings" from 2027). Award pricing and perks can move — check current rates before transferring points in.
- Wells Fargo application/bonus rules: the bonus is typically unavailable if you've earned one on this card within the past 48 months — verify current terms.
- Redemption pricing is dynamic within bands; the same hotel can price differently by night. Run the CPP math before booking.
Who should get it
Get the Select if you'll actually use Choice's strengths — European and Japanese city stays, road-trip nights at home — or you're a Choice regular for work. The anniversary points make it mathematically easy to keep, and Platinum plus never-expiring points make it a low-maintenance hold.
