How each airline prices Maui to Los Angeles

Every program uses its own method, which is why the same seat can cost very different amounts. Here's the math for each program that books this trip, cheapest first:

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards (on Southwest, 1 stop): Tied to the cash fare. Southwest has no award chart: the points price is the cash fare divided by about 1.3–1.4 cents, so a $100 fare is roughly 7,000–7,500 points. Around 8,000 is typical on a sale fare for this trip.
  • Atmos Rewards (on Alaska): Distance chart. Atmos prices Alaska and Hawaiian flights by miles flown. The 2,483-mile nonstop falls in the 2,101–3,500-mile band: from 12,500 economy, 30,000 first. These are starting prices; popular dates price higher.
  • Air Canada Aeroplan (on United): Distance chart. Aeroplan prices United flights within North America by total distance. The 2,483-mile nonstop falls in the 1,501–2,750-mile band: from 12,500 economy, 25,000 business, plus a booking fee of about $30. That's the starting price; United can release seats above it.
  • Cathay Asia Miles (on American): Distance chart, whole trip. Cathay Asia Miles prices American and Alaska flights by total distance. The 2,483-mile nonstop falls in the 751–2,750-mile band: 15,000 economy, 33,000 business.
  • Delta SkyMiles (on Delta): Dynamic pricing. Delta sets the price of its own flights by demand, like a cash fare; there's no chart. About 15,000 is the lowest economy price seen to Hawaii on off-peak dates, and about 40,000 in first. Busy dates can cost several times more.
  • Avianca LifeMiles (on United): Unpublished chart. LifeMiles doesn't publish its prices for United flights and changed them without notice in 2025. About 15,000 is what it has been charging for a trip like this; check lifemiles.com before you transfer.
  • Air France-KLM Flying Blue (on Delta): Dynamic pricing. Flying Blue prices Delta flights by demand, with no chart, and since September 2026 the price also depends on the fare type you pick. Trips this long have been seen as low as 17,500 in economy, often below SkyMiles for the same seat. Taxes are higher, about $20–30.
  • AAdvantage (on American): Dynamic pricing. American sets the price of its own flights by demand, like a cash fare; there's no chart. About 20,000 is the lowest economy price seen to Hawaii on off-peak dates. Busy dates can cost several times more.
  • British Airways Avios (on American): Distance chart, per flight. British Airways charges each flight separately by its length. The 2,483-mile nonstop falls in the 2,001–3,000-mile band of the chart BA uses for American and Alaska flights: about 22,000 economy, 55,000 business/first. A connection would be two charges, so it's quoted for nonstops only.
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (on Delta): Distance chart, per flight. Virgin Atlantic charges each Delta flight separately by its length. The 2,483-mile nonstop falls in the 2,001–3,000-mile band: 22,000 economy, 70,000 up front. Nonstops only; a connection would be two charges.
  • United MileagePlus (on United): Dynamic pricing. United sets the price of its own flights by demand, like a cash fare; there's no chart. About 22,500 is the lowest economy price seen to Hawaii on off-peak dates, and about 45,000 in first. Busy dates can cost several times more.
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer (on American): Distance chart, whole trip. Qantas adds up every flight in the trip and prices the total, so a short connection doesn't add a second charge. The 2,483-mile nonstop falls in the 2,401–3,600-mile band: 23,300 economy, 68,400 business, on American or Alaska.
  • Turkish Miles&Smiles (on United): Zone chart. Turkish charges one flat price for United flights to or from Hawaii, whatever the distance: 25,000 economy, 40,000 business.

What it's worth

A useful test: bank points are worth about 1.5 cents each when you could use them elsewhere. So 12,500 points is a good deal when the cash fare is above about $194. On Maui–Los Angeles, that's common on busy dates and in the last few weeks before travel, when fares jump and fixed award charts don't. For a premium seat, 25,000 points pays off when the cash fare tops about $411. See our points valuations for each program.

How to book

Atmos Rewards

Atmos prices Alaska and Hawaiian flights by distance, from 12,500 in economy and 30,000 in first on Alaska's OGG–LAX nonstop. Free changes and cancellations. Feeds: Bilt Points 1:1 and the Atmos Rewards Ascent Visa Signature Credit Card and Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite Credit Card.

Southwest Rapid Rewards

Southwest Rapid Rewards has no award chart: points cost about the cash fare divided by 1.3–1.4 cents, so expect around 8,000 on a sale fare. Points come back if you cancel. Price points like cash: book during Southwest fare sales, and rebook if the points price drops. Feeds: Chase Ultimate Rewards 1:1, Bilt Points 1:1 and the Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card.

Air Canada Aeroplan

Aeroplan books United saver space by distance: 12,500 in economy, 25,000 in business on United's OGG–LAX nonstop. Add a stopover for 5,000 points. Feeds: Chase Ultimate Rewards 1:1, Amex Membership Rewards 1:1, Capital One miles 1:1, Bilt Points 1:1 and the Chase Air Canada Aeroplan Card.

Cathay Asia Miles

Cathay Asia Miles prices American and Alaska flights by total distance: 15,000 in economy, 33,000 in business on American's OGG–LAX nonstop. Connections don't add to the price. Partner space must be visible as AA/Alaska saver. Use the BA or Qantas search to confirm the seat, then book with Asia Miles. Feeds: Amex Membership Rewards 5:4, Capital One miles 1:1, Citi ThankYou 1:1, Bilt Points 1:1 and Wells Fargo Rewards 1:1.

Finding availability

  • Book early. Schedules open about 330–337 days ahead on the US airlines. Saver seats are easiest to find in the first few weeks and again in the last two weeks if planes aren't full.
  • Search the airline's own site first. Southwest.com, alaskaair.com, united.com and aa.com show the seat; then price the same flight with each partner program.
  • Use flexible-date calendars. One day either side often halves a dynamic price.
  • Transfer last. Bank transfers are one-way. Find the seat, then move exactly the points you need.
  • When to go: March–May and September–November bring warm, dry weather and fewer theme-park crowds; early summer often has morning marine layer ('June Gloom').

Who should do it

  • Anyone holding Chase Ultimate Rewards, Bilt Points, Amex Membership Rewards and Capital One miles: they move into these programs.
  • Atmos Rewards members who already have miles in the account.
  • Travelers with fixed dates on busy weeks, when cash fares spike but chart prices hold.
  • Families on a budget: Southwest Rapid Rewards points cost roughly the fare in cents, with free changes.

What to do in Los Angeles

  • Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Sign: A free public observatory in Griffith Park with views of the Hollywood Sign and the city.
  • The Getty Center: A hilltop art museum in Brentwood with free admission (parking charged) and gardens designed by Robert Irwin.
  • Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach: A historic amusement pier and, just south, the Venice boardwalk and canals.
  • Universal Studios Hollywood: A working film studio and theme park with a studio tour and Super Nintendo World.
  • Disneyland Resort (Anaheim): Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, about 25 miles southeast of downtown LA.

Getting around: A rental car or rideshare is the norm because distances are long, although Metro rail covers downtown, Hollywood, Santa Monica and Universal City, and LAX has a Metro connector station.

Hotels you can book on points: Andaz West Hollywood (Hyatt), InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown (IHG) and Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills (Hilton).
