The CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® — now marketed as the Citi® / AAdvantage Business™ World Elite Mastercard® — is the small-business twin of Citi's personal American Airlines card, with one benefit the personal card doesn't have: an annual Companion Certificate for heavy spenders. It suits a business owner who flies American, checks bags, and can route real expenses — gas, telecom, car rentals — through the card. For the personal Platinum Select and Executive cards, see our Citi AAdvantage cards guide.

What the points are worth
We value AAdvantage miles at 1.65¢ each — the most valuable U.S. legacy-carrier currency, because American still prices partner awards on levels with real sweet spots. The full case is in the Citi AAdvantage cards guide; the one-line version is that JAL, Qatar, British Airways and Cathay business-class awards routinely clear 6–10¢ per mile, and even domestic web specials beat baseline.
The cents-per-point (CPP) formula, every time: (cash price − taxes/fees) ÷ miles × 100 = ¢ per mile
A 65,000-mile bonus is ~$1,070 of flights at baseline — potentially far more on a partner award, like American to Alaska for 28,000 miles.
Where your points can go
These are American-only miles: they redeem on American and its oneworld partners (JAL, Qatar, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Alaska and more), and that partner list is where the value lives — start with the best sweet spots guide. They don't transfer to other airlines. The rare bridge into AA from a flexible currency is Citi ThankYou: a Citi Strata Premier can transfer points to AAdvantage to top up an award this card's earning started.
Earning rates
| Rate | Category |
|---|---|
| 2x | Eligible American Airlines purchases |
| 2x | Gas stations & car rentals |
| 2x | Telecommunications, cable & satellite providers |
| 1x | Everything else |
Note how business-shaped that list is versus the personal card's restaurant/gas categories: fleet fuel, rental cars, the office internet and phone bills all earn double. On top of miles, every $1 spent earns 1 Loyalty Point toward AAdvantage elite status — employee card spend included.
Benefits & credits
- American Airlines Companion Certificate — earn one each cardmembership year you spend $30,000+ and renew the card. Redeeming costs $99 plus taxes and fees: effectively a buy-one-get-one domestic round trip (restrictions below).
- Free first checked bag on domestic American itineraries for you and up to 4 companions on the same reservation — easily $200+ saved per family round trip.
- Preferred boarding (Group 5) on American flights.
- 25% savings on eligible inflight purchases — Wi-Fi, food and beverages — when you pay with the card.
- Loyalty Points: 1 per $1 spent by you and your employee cardholders. A current promotion (through December 31, 2026 — verify) additionally credits the primary cardmember with a match of Loyalty Points earned by authorized users.
- No foreign transaction fees.
Best uses (sweet spots), with examples
1. The Companion Certificate, if $30k of spend is natural. Put $30,000 of genuine business expenses through the card, and a $450 domestic round trip for two becomes $450 + $99 + taxes/fees — roughly $300 saved on a single booking, on top of the ~30,000 miles and 30,000 Loyalty Points that spend earned anyway. Don't manufacture spend to chase it; do claim it if the spend exists.
2. Checked bags as a standing fee-eraser. You plus four companions, one bag each, round trip: that's 10 waived bag fees in one trip — several times the (first-year-waived) $99 fee.
3. A real path toward status. $30,000 of card spend = 30,000 Loyalty Points — three-quarters of the way to AAdvantage Gold (40,000) before you've boarded a plane. Employee card spend accelerates it.
4. Partner awards are still the endgame. Redeem the miles on JAL or Qatar business class and the CPP math gets silly — the same sweet spots as the personal cards, covered in the family guide.
Fine print worth knowing
- Companion Certificate restrictions are real: domestic round-trip economy within the lower 48 states only (no Alaska/Hawaii), the primary cardmember must be one of the travelers, booking is by phone through American's meeting-services desk (not online), the certificate lasts one year from issue, and the companion earns no miles and isn't upgrade-eligible.
- Citi bonus rules: the welcome bonus is typically unavailable if you've received a bonus on this same business card within a look-back window (~48 months — verify current terms). Having personal Citi AAdvantage cards does not block this card's bonus.
- It stays off your personal credit report. Citi business cards don't report to consumer bureaus, so this card doesn't add to a future Chase 5/24 count — a quiet structural perk of going the business route.
- You need a business — but sole proprietors (freelance income, a side gig) can apply with their SSN.
- The free bag requires the AA ticket to be purchased with the card, and applies on domestic itineraries.
- AAdvantage miles expire after 24 months of inactivity; any card spend resets the clock.
Who should get it
Get this card if you run business expenses American-adjacent — you fly AA, check bags, and spend on gas, telecom or rentals — and especially if $30,000/year of card spend is realistic, because the Companion Certificate is the one benefit no personal AAdvantage card offers.
Get the personal Platinum Select instead if your spend is mostly dining and personal travel — its categories fit consumers better, and its own bonus is separately earnable. Many AA loyalists eventually hold both; see how the pieces fit in your Points Path.
Bottom line
The CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select takes everything that works about the personal card — the free bags, the boarding, the 1.65¢ miles — and adds business-shaped 2x categories, Loyalty Points on every employee dollar, and a Companion Certificate that turns $30,000 of unavoidable spend into a second seat for $99 plus taxes. Track the miles it earns alongside everything else in your Rewards Wallet.
