American added gift card redemptions in March 2026 and kept its 2027 status thresholds unchanged; values below reflect both.
American AAdvantage miles are worth about 1.65 cents each to us, the highest of the big three U.S. airlines. NerdWallet's 2026 analysis puts them at 1.7 cents. Most of that value comes from partner awards on airlines like Japan Airlines, Qatar and British Airways, plus cheap off-peak domestic flights from 7,500 miles. Spend them on hotels, cars or the new gift cards and a mile is worth about half a cent.

Every way to redeem, and what a mile is worth
| Redemption | Cents per mile | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Partner business/first (JAL, Qatar, Cathay, BA) | ~4¢ to 10¢ | Partner prices are steadier than AA's own |
| ~1.3¢ to 1.8¢ | Dynamic; Web Specials from 7,500 | |
| ~1.5¢ to 3¢ | Dynamic; can be very high on peak dates | |
| ~0.6¢ | Booked through AA's hotel site | |
| Rental cars | ~0.6¢ | |
| Gift cards (since March 2026) | ~0.5¢ | From 2,000 miles for a $10 card |
AAdvantage miles to dollars: 10,000, 50,000 and 100,000
| Method | 10,000 miles | 50,000 miles | 100,000 miles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gift cards (~0.5¢) | $50 | $250 | $500 |
| Hotels, cars (~0.6¢) | $60 | $300 | $600 |
| Our value (1.65¢) | $165 | $825 | $1,650 |
| Partner business class (~5¢) | $500 | $2,500 | $5,000 |
A worked example: a $230 off-peak flight at 12,500 miles + $5.60 is worth ($230 − $5.60) ÷ 12,500 × 100 = 1.8¢ per mile. At 7,500 miles on a Web Special, the same seat would be worth 3¢.
AAdvantage miles vs Loyalty Points
They are two separate balances.
- Miles are the currency you spend on flights and other rewards. Spending them never affects your status.
- Loyalty Points only count toward elite status. You earn 1 Loyalty Point for each eligible mile you earn from flying, cards and partners. Card spend on a Citi AAdvantage card earns 1 per dollar. Bonus miles, such as a card's welcome bonus, earn miles but not Loyalty Points. You can't spend Loyalty Points on flights.
For the 2027 status year (points earned March 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027), the thresholds are 40,000 Loyalty Points for Gold, 75,000 for Platinum, 125,000 for Platinum Pro and 200,000 for Executive Platinum. Loyalty Point Rewards add perks starting at 15,000.
How to get the most from AAdvantage miles
- Book partners, not just American. Japan Airlines and Qatar business class are where the outsized value is.
- Search the calendar for off-peak dates. Mid-January to mid-March and September to mid-November are usually cheapest.
- Earn miles through Citi. ThankYou points from a Citi Strata Premier transfer 1:1 to AAdvantage. It is the only major bank currency that does.
- Skip Marriott transfers. 60,000 Marriott points become just 20,000 AA miles, with no transfer bonus.
The worst ways to use AAdvantage miles
- Gift cards at about 0.5¢. A $25 Airbnb card has cost 5,000 miles.
- Hotels and rental cars at about 0.6¢.
- Peak-date domestic awards that cost 50,000+ miles for a fare you could buy for $300.
