The United Gateway℠ Card is the odd one out in United's card lineup: it costs nothing, earns modestly, and yet keeps you plugged into the MileagePlus perks that actually matter — cardmember-only award space and discounted award pricing. It suits the occasional United flyer who refuses to pay an annual fee but still wants their miles to go further, and anyone building a Chase relationship who isn't ready for the Explorer. Its honest pitch is access, not earning power.

What the points are worth
We value United miles at 1.35¢ each — see the full reasoning in our United MileagePlus guide. The short version: United prices awards dynamically, but no fuel surcharges, free award changes and redeposits, and miles that never expire keep the floor solid, and Star Alliance partner business class routinely clears 3–6¢. A 30,000-mile bonus is therefore worth **$405** in flights at baseline — more if you save it for a partner award.
What this card adds on top is unusual for a no-fee product: as a cardmember, the same award can simply cost you fewer miles (see Benefits below), which quietly raises the value of every United mile you hold.
Where your points can go
Gateway earnings land directly in United MileagePlus, which reaches 190+ countries via Star Alliance — Lufthansa, ANA, Air Canada and the rest. The sweet spots (Excursionist Perk, surcharge-free partner business class, cheap domestic Saver economy) belong to the programme, not any one card, and we cover them all in the United MileagePlus guide.
Because United is also a 1:1 instant transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards, a Chase Sapphire Preferred feeds the same balance — the classic setup is Sapphire for earning, Gateway for the cardmember award perks.
Earning rates
| Rate | Category |
|---|---|
| 2x | United purchases (Chase counts 5x total on eligible United flights once your 3x base MileagePlus member earning is included) |
| 2x | Gas stations |
| 2x | Local transit & commuting — rideshare, taxis, trains, tolls, mass transit |
| 1x | Everything else |
Let's be honest: at 1.35¢/mile, 2x categories return ~2.7% in travel value — fine, not special. If earning rate is what you care about, a transferable-points card wins. This card's case is made below.
Benefits & credits
- Discounted award flights. United's February 2026 announcement lists the Gateway among cards eligible for at least 10% off United and United Express award flights from April 2, 2026 (at least 15% for Premier-status cardmembers). Note that Chase's own Gateway page ties a "save 10% or more on flights booked with miles" benefit to $10,000 in calendar-year spend — check your card's current benefit terms for exactly what unlocks with and without the spend threshold.
- Expanded Saver award space. United shows primary cardmembers extra Saver-level inventory under a "Cardmembers Save" banner — United says cardmembers save about 30% on average on these fares versus standard award pricing. Primary cardmember only; authorized users don't get it.
- 2 free checked bags after $10,000 spend in a calendar year (per Chase's current Gateway page — verify).
- 25% back as a statement credit on inflight food, beverages and Wi-Fi on United-operated flights, and on United Club premium drinks.
- Trip cancellation/interruption insurance — up to $1,500 per traveler / $6,000 per trip.
- Auto rental collision damage waiver, purchase protection (120 days, up to $500 per item) and extended warranty.
- Complimentary DoorDash DashPass (activate by December 31, 2027 — verify current promo).
- No foreign transaction fees — rare on a no-fee airline card.
Best uses (sweet spots), with examples
1. Cheaper awards for holding a free card. This is the whole game. A Newark–London economy Saver that priced at 44,700 miles for a regular member has shown at 40,000 miles for cardmembers — an 11% saving for a card that costs nothing. Across a family's worth of tickets, cardmember pricing can save tens of thousands of miles a year.
2. The commuter drip. 2x on transit, tolls, rideshare and gas is a sensible place to point everyday commuting spend if you want it to become United miles specifically. A $300/month commute is ~7,200 miles a year — a meaningful chunk of a domestic one-way.
3. Pair it with a Sapphire. Earn flexible points on a Sapphire Preferred, transfer to United 1:1 only when you've found the award, and let the Gateway's cardmember pricing and Saver access make those transferred points go further. The Gateway is the cheapest possible key to that door.
4. Programme sweet spots still apply. Excursionist Perk free segments, surcharge-free Lufthansa/ANA business class — every MileagePlus sweet spot in the family guide works identically with miles earned here.
Fine print worth knowing
- Chase 5/24: 5+ personal cards opened (any issuer) in 24 months usually means denial. Check your count first.
- Bonus eligibility: Chase's standard rule typically blocks the bonus if you hold the card or earned a Gateway bonus in the past 24 months — verify the current offer terms.
- Some perks are spend-gated. Chase's page ties the checked-bag benefit and an award discount to $10,000 calendar-year spend; United's 2026 cardmember award discount announcement lists the Gateway with no threshold mentioned. The terms you agree to at approval are what count — read them.
- Cardmember award perks are for the primary cardmember's MileagePlus account only.
- Miles never expire, and award redeposits are free.
Who should get it
Get the Gateway if you fly United a couple of times a year, want cardmember award pricing and expanded Saver space, and simply won't pay an annual fee. It's also a sensible product-change landing spot if an Explorer fee stops earning its keep.
Get the United Explorer instead if you ever check a bag — its free first checked bag typically pays its fee in one round trip, and it adds lounge passes and stronger award perks. See where either fits your setup in your Points Path.
Bottom line
The United Gateway is a free membership card dressed as a credit card: weak earning, no fee, and genuinely useful cardmember award pricing that makes every United mile you own — from any source — worth a little more. Hold it for access, earn elsewhere, and track the balance alongside the rest of your programmes in your Rewards Wallet.
